Dear Sir or Madam,
Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Sir/ Madam,
I am writing to complain about a problem with a piece of equipment a computer that I purchased from your company recently. I work from home and rely on this equipment to complete my daily work.
Unfortunately, the computer has stopped working properly. Although i have tried to solve the problem with the following the instructions in the users manuals and restarting several times, the problem has not been resolved. Moreover, the display of the computer was blinking when I tried to start the computer.
As result, I am unable to complete some of my work efficiently and this is causing considerable inconvenience. Moreover, I have to complete my presentation work next week.
I would be grateful if you could arrange for the computer to be repaired or replaced as soon as possible. If a replacement is available, I would prefer this option because I need the computer for my work everyday.
Please also let me know whether I need to bring it to your shop or if you can arrange a collection from my home. I look forward your prompt response.
Thank you.
Your faithfully,
Krupa Maisuria.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 8.0
You have covered all parts of the task well, earning a high score for addressing the prompt thoroughly. You successfully described the equipment problem by mentioning the computer blinking and failing to start, explained how it affects your daily work and upcoming presentation, and clearly stated your preferred solution of a repair or replacement. The ideas are well developed and supported with appropriate details, such as mentioning your work-from-home setup. The tone is appropriate for a formal business letter, and all bullet points from the prompt are fully satisfied with relevant and extended ideas.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.5
Your letter demonstrates a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. Information and ideas are arranged coherently, with each paragraph serving a distinct purpose in the overall structure. You use cohesive devices flexibly and appropriately, such as 'Although', 'Moreover', and 'As result', which guide the reader smoothly through your complaint and requests. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and effectively, dividing your introduction, problem description, impact on work, requested action, and closing neatly into separate blocks. The progression of thought is easy to follow from the initial statement of the problem down to the final call to action.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.5
You display an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting some less common lexical items such as 'considerable inconvenience', 'prompt response', and 'efficiently'. However, there are a few minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as omitting a preposition in the final sentence ('I look forward your prompt response' instead of 'to your prompt response'), and a minor typo ('Your faithfully' instead of 'Yours faithfully'). These vocabulary and spelling choices are sufficient for the task and do not impede communication, showing some awareness of style and collocation, which places your performance securely in the mid-range band for lexical resource.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms effectively, incorporating subordinate clauses like 'Although I have tried to solve the problem...' and 'I would be grateful if you could arrange...'. There are some errors in grammar and punctuation present in the text, such as the double subject/conjunction slip 'the following the instructions' and the missing article in 'As result' instead of 'As a result'. Nevertheless, these errors rarely impede communication. Your control over verb tenses is generally good, and punctuation across the letter is mostly accurate, fulfilling the requirements for a mixed structure with manageable slips.
