Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The response successfully covers all three parts of the prompt, earning a score that reflects a solid overall attempt. You clearly described the problem by stating that the laptop suddenly displayed a black screen and a low battery warning. You also explained how this affected your work, noting that it halted your progress and caused you to miss your project deadline. Finally, you stated what you wanted the company to do, requesting a technician or a replacement. However, some ideas show features of higher bands while others remain slightly limited and under-developed. For instance, the explanation of the impact on your work could be expanded with more specific details about the project. To reach the next level, ensure that every bullet point is explored thoroughly with extended, fully supported ideas rather than brief statements.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The letter maintains a coherent overall arrangement with a recognisable beginning and end, and the paragraphs are generally organised around clear topics. You used some cohesive devices such as 'Moreover', 'However', and 'Due to this' to connect your ideas. However, cohesion is at times mechanical or slightly faulty, and referencing is not always completely clear. For example, the transition between discussing the battery issue and the time delay feels a bit abrupt. To improve your score in this area, you should work on using a wider variety of cohesive links more naturally, ensuring that your sentences flow smoothly from one to the next without interrupting the logical progression of the letter.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

Your vocabulary is adequate for the task, providing enough terms to communicate your core message about the broken laptop and warranty. You attempted some less common vocabulary such as 'dissatisfaction', 'inspection', and 'replacement'. However, there are noticeable lexical errors, particularly with word choice, word form, and spelling, such as 'purched' instead of purchased, 'betery' and 'bettrey' instead of battery, 'sufficiant' instead of sufficient, 'delying' instead of delaying, and 'devise' instead of device. These errors show an attempt to use a broader lexicon, but spelling slips and inaccurate word forms prevent you from achieving a higher band. To advance, focus on mastering the correct spelling of common functional words and refining your word choice for greater precision.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You demonstrated a mix of simple and complex sentence forms throughout the letter, such as conditional structures and relative clauses. There are some errors in grammar and punctuation, but they rarely impede communication. Examples of grammatical slips include 'I am recent buyer' missing the article 'a', 'showing black screen' instead of 'showing a black screen', 'even i had charged fully' with pronoun capitalization and word order issues, and 'this situation occured many time' with a pluralization error. Additionally, fragments like 'If by any chance, if it is not in condition to repair it.' disrupt sentence flow. To reach the next band, you need to produce more error-free sentences, improve your control over articles and prepositions, and avoid sentence fragments.
