Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Sir/Madam,
I am writing this letter to express my dismay about the phone battery you sold to my company on July, 2026.
I am an accountant of Asian Food Company, Brampton and I have been working as a remote job since last year. Therefore, my Boss alloted my phone and laptop for business purposes. As the old cell phone was not working, my manager placed an order for new one. Unfortunately, this new one has been the worst experience by me than the previous one. The primary issue is the battery because I have to be plug this phone throughout the night, so that, I can use it for next day. Nevertheless it still run for around five hours.
However, most of my tasks are rely on the phone including phone calls and sent the documents and so on. Moreover, I have to do upload the trade invoices daily. Due to this phone, I am unable to complete my duties which have to pay off huge cost.
Lastly, I request you to kindly consider my problem and offer me a new cell-phone as soon as possible and after reciving the new one, I will return the current one which I am currently using it. I eagerly look forward you response.
Yours faithfully,
Ria

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
You address all three points clearly: you identify the battery problem, explain that the phone supports calls and document handling, and request a replacement while offering to return the current phone. The complaint is relevant and your purpose remains clear throughout. You also give useful context about working remotely and the phone’s limited operating time. To make the response more fully developed, specify the equipment or purchase details more precisely and explain the practical consequences of the five-hour battery life—for example, missed calls or delays uploading invoices. A more direct, professional statement of the remedy and any expected timeframe would also strengthen the request.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The letter follows a sensible sequence: you introduce the complaint, provide background, describe its effect on your duties, and finish with a request. Paragraphing helps distinguish these stages, and linking expressions such as “Unfortunately,” “Moreover,” and “Lastly” make the progression easy to follow. Some connections are less smooth, however. “Nevertheless” does not clearly contrast with the preceding point about charging overnight, and “Due to this phone” leaves the relationship between the battery problem and the work consequences vague. The final request also combines several ideas in one long sentence. Use more precise references and transitions, and separate the replacement request from the return arrangement to make cohesion more natural.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use vocabulary relevant to a formal complaint, including “primary issue,” “business purposes,” “complete my duties,” and “offer me a new cell-phone.” This gives you enough language to communicate the main problem and desired outcome. However, several word choices and collocations are noticeably inaccurate or unnatural, such as “dismay about the phone battery,” “worst experience by me,” and “pay off huge cost.” There are also spelling and form errors, including “alloted” and “reciving.” These choices sometimes make the reader pause, even though the overall meaning is recoverable. Aim for standard complaint-letter phrases and check spelling and collocation carefully; this will make your vocabulary more precise and professional.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt a mix of simple and more complex sentences, including explanations with “because” and “so that,” and the overall message can be understood. However, errors occur across sentence patterns and verb forms. For example, “I have to be plug this phone” should be “I have to keep this phone plugged in,” while “most of my tasks are rely on the phone” needs a corrected verb structure, such as “most of my tasks rely on the phone.” There are also agreement and tense problems in “it still run” and “my manager placed an order for new one,” as well as an awkward final clause, “which I am currently using it.” Practise checking each sentence for a clear subject, correctly formed verb, and unnecessary repeated pronouns.
