Student answer (Band 7.5)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writing to express my dissatisfaction with the laptop that I bought from your shop last week.
I work from home and this piece of equipment plays a significant role in my job. Due to the consistently increasing technical issues, I am not able to complete my tasks effectively.
The major issue is that the computer turns off itself while using some business softwares, leaving my work incomplete and unsaved. As a result, i have to perform my tasks repeatedly, wasting my crucial time. Furthermore, the battery doesn't even last for couple of hours, making it impossible to work at a cafe or a park.
These technical issues are limiting my productivity and preventing me from accomplishing my tasks. This has put me in a very poor situation in my professional career as i am continuously missing deadlines.
I would like you to either fix the problems with this laptop or provide me a new one with advanced technical specifications, so that i can run the programs efficiently. I hope that you will arrange a better and prompt solution.
Yours sincerely,
Gurpreet Singh

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 8.0
The letter covers all three requirements clearly: you identify the laptop’s shutdowns and short battery life, explain their effects on unfinished work and missed deadlines, and request either a repair or replacement. The consequences are developed with relevant detail, particularly the need to repeat tasks and the difficulty working away from home. Your purpose and dissatisfaction are clear throughout, and the tone is appropriately formal. To make the response even more complete, specify a practical next step, such as asking the company to arrange an inspection or confirming when it will respond. The request for a replacement with “advanced technical specifications” is understandable, but stating that it should meet your work needs would make the remedy more focused.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.5
The information follows a clear progression: you introduce the complaint, describe the faults, explain their impact, and then state the remedy you want. Paragraphing supports this sequence, and linking expressions such as “As a result” and “Furthermore” help show how the problems affect your work. The letter is easy to follow overall. Some ideas about reduced productivity and missed deadlines repeat the earlier point that tasks are left incomplete, so you could tighten this section or use the space to add a specific request for a response or repair timeline. The transitions are generally effective, though a more distinct paragraph for the requested action would make the closing stage of the letter stand out more clearly.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.5
You use a suitable range of vocabulary for a formal complaint, including “express my dissatisfaction,” “technical issues,” “productivity,” and “missing deadlines.” These choices communicate the problem and its professional consequences clearly. There are also some less natural combinations: “turns off itself” would be more idiomatically expressed as “shuts down unexpectedly,” and “business softwares” is better as “business software” or “business applications.” “Advanced technical specifications” sounds somewhat vague in this context; describing the laptop as suitable for the programs you use would be more precise. Overall, the vocabulary is adequate and sometimes specific, but more natural collocations and precise wording would strengthen fluency and control.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 7.0
The letter includes a useful mix of sentence forms, including complex clauses such as “Due to the consistently increasing technical issues, I am not able to complete my tasks effectively” and the participle phrase “making it impossible to work at a cafe or a park.” Many sentences are clear and grammatically controlled. A few errors remain: “turns off itself” has an incorrect reflexive construction, “doesn't even last for couple of hours” needs an article (“a couple”), and “i” should be capitalised in several places. The sentence beginning “I would like you to either fix…” is understandable, though its structure could be made more balanced. These issues do not prevent understanding, but careful proofreading would improve accuracy.
