Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing this letter to express my concern regarding the laptop that I bought from your shop last week. So I purchased a new lenovo Ideapad from your shop. I am facing some problems with this product

Firstly, It is brand new laptop so It is surprising for me to have trouble with starting the laptop. It takes almost 10 minutes to start the windows. Secondly Some of the keys in the keyboard are not working accurately. I am having these issues with the laptop from ther very first day.

In addition to that, I am a contant writer in ABC company. My job is totally based on the writing contant which I mainly do on the laptop. So it is challenging for me to do my job properly. So I would appreciate it if you could replace this laptop with another new piece of laptop. I have all the documents that shows it is in Warranty.

I look forword to hearing from you.

Yours Faithfully,

XYZ

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

You address all three points clearly: you identify the laptop and its faults, explain that slow start-up and malfunctioning keys interfere with your writing job, and request a replacement. The request is polite and supported by the mention of warranty documents, so the purpose of the letter is clear throughout. The details about the start-up time and the keys make the complaint specific. To strengthen the response further, develop the impact on your work a little more—for example, explain whether deadlines are being delayed or how often you cannot type accurately. Also, the opening repeats that you bought the laptop from the shop, so that space could be used for a more precise account of the problem or the action you expect.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The letter has a clear overall arrangement: an opening stating its purpose, a paragraph describing the faults, a paragraph explaining their effect and requesting a remedy, and a suitable closing. Sequencing phrases such as “Firstly,” “Secondly,” and “In addition to that” help the reader follow the points. However, some linking is mechanical or repetitive: “So” appears several times, and “In addition to that” introduces the work impact even though it is closely connected to the preceding complaint. The opening also repeats the purchase information. For a more flexible progression, group the faults and their consequences more tightly, and use fewer, more natural transitions. The paragraphing is appropriate, but smoother links between ideas would make the letter easier to read.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use enough vocabulary to communicate the complaint and its purpose, including “express my concern,” “challenging,” “replace,” and “warranty.” However, noticeable spelling and word-choice problems reduce precision: “contant writer” and “writing contant” appear to mean “content writer” and “written content,” while “ther” and “look forword” are misspelled. Some phrases are also unnatural, such as “another new piece of laptop” and “working accurately.” These choices do not prevent the reader from understanding the main message, but they limit the range and naturalness of the language. Aim for accurate, conventional collocations—for example, “the keyboard keys are not functioning properly”—and proofread spelling and capitalization.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The letter communicates its meaning, and you attempt some longer structures, including “I would appreciate it if you could replace this laptop” and “My job is totally based on the writing content which I mainly do on the laptop.” However, the range is limited, and errors occur in sentence boundaries, articles, agreement, and punctuation. For example, “I am facing some problems with this product” needs a full stop, while “Some of the keys” should not begin with a capital after a continuing sentence. “I have all the documents that shows” has a subject–verb agreement error; use “documents that show.” The sentence about being a writer also needs clearer construction. Practise combining ideas accurately and check each sentence for complete structure and agreement.
