Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing to express my dissatisfaction with a piece of item that i use to complete my task regarding work at company. Laptop is not working properly. Battery is not long lasted. The screen of laptop is freezing whille working. It seems hard for me to do work on time. It takes more time to complete any task.

It has few adverse effects on my performances. Firstly, I always late to submit an important files. Secondly, I have to waste a large amount of time to fix it during work. I have also lost my countless files which are needed in future. Therefore, I have to make it again. I have lost my art skill in these file.

I would appreciate it, If company can change it. The company should pay attention towards work performance during bad funcating of laptop. If new laptop expensive for company to purchase, they can sort out problem by hiring professional machanic. I think it would be budget friendly for you.

I look forward to hearing from you as soon as possible.

Your faithfully,

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You address all three required points: you identify the laptop’s battery and freezing problems, explain that they delay tasks and lead to lost files, and request a replacement or repair. The purpose is clear and the tone is generally appropriate for a complaint letter. The impact on your work is the most developed part, with specific consequences such as late submissions and recreating files. However, the request could be more precise: state whether you prefer a replacement or a repair, and ask for a clear next step or timeframe. The sentence about losing your “art skill” in the files is unclear, so explain what was lost or omit it. This covers the task well overall, but some details need clearer development.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The letter has a clear overall structure: the opening introduces the fault, the next paragraph describes its effects, and the final body paragraph makes a request. Sequencing words such as “Firstly,” “Secondly,” and “Therefore” help the reader follow the consequences. The closing is also suitable for a formal letter. Some connections are mechanical, however, and the relationship between ideas is occasionally unclear. For example, “I have lost my art skill in these file” does not clearly connect to the earlier point about lost files. The request paragraph also shifts from asking for a replacement to suggesting a repair without clearly indicating your preference. Use more precise links and organise the requested action as a clear choice or priority.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use some relevant vocabulary for describing a workplace equipment problem, including “freezing,” “submit,” “adverse effects,” and “professional.” This gives you enough language to communicate the main issue. However, noticeable word-choice, collocation, word-form, and spelling errors sometimes make the message difficult to interpret. Examples include “a piece of item,” “battery is not long lasted,” “important files,” and “bad funcating.” “Art skill” is especially unclear in the context of lost work files. Aim for natural combinations such as “the battery does not last long,” “important files,” and “the laptop is malfunctioning.” Proofreading spelling and choosing precise terms for the lost work would make the letter clearer and more professional.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You communicate through a mixture of short statements and some longer structures, including “If new laptop expensive for company to purchase, they can sort out problem…” This shows an attempt to use conditional sentences, but the structure is often faulty. There are repeated problems with articles, verb forms, agreement, and sentence construction: for example, “Laptop is not working properly,” “I always late to submit,” and “I would appreciate it, If company can change it.” The final request also needs a complete conditional form, such as “If a new laptop is too expensive, the company could arrange a repair.” Capitalisation and punctuation are inconsistent, including the unnecessary capital in “If.” Practise accurate basic sentence patterns first, then build longer sentences around them.
