Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I would like to express my dissatisfaction through this letter for the product that I often use to compelete my office work.

I have been using wifi dongle since I have started doing work from home. Eversince, I have replaced this product two times because it get shot circuit due to continues long working hours. Beside this, it burned my laptop's USB socket as it sparked before going bad.

As mentioned above it sparked, I had to shut down my laptop in order to maintain necessary precautions. All the work have been lost that I have to submit in coming weeks. Not even USB port went bad but also it affected the battery.

I would like to request good alernative instead of getting same dongle as soon as possible. Also, I would like to request a new laptop so that I can work safely. Please accept the consideration and let me know if you need more information on it.

Kind regards,

Dhruv

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

You address all three requested points: you identify the dongle’s short-circuiting and sparking, explain that you had to shut down your laptop and lost work, and request a replacement alternative and a new laptop. The purpose is clear throughout, and the details make the complaint relevant and specific. To strengthen the response further, develop the practical consequences more precisely—for example, explain whether the lost work delayed a deadline or whether you are currently unable to work. The request for a new laptop is also significant, so briefly explain why repair or replacement of the damaged USB port would not be sufficient. Overall, the letter covers the task clearly, though some supporting details could be extended.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The letter follows a sensible sequence: it introduces the complaint, describes the equipment failure, explains its effect, and ends with requests. Paragraphing helps distinguish these stages, and phrases such as “As mentioned above” and “Also” guide the reader through the message. However, some links feel mechanical or unclear. “As mentioned above it sparked” repeats information rather than smoothly introducing the consequence, while “Not even USB port went bad but also it affected the battery” makes the relationship between the damage and the preceding points difficult to follow. Use clearer transitions and refer explicitly to the dongle, laptop port, and battery. This would make the progression more consistently smooth and the connections between ideas easier to follow.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use vocabulary relevant to a formal complaint, including “dissatisfaction,” “necessary precautions,” and “alternative,” and the reader can generally understand the equipment problem. However, several noticeable spelling and word-choice errors reduce precision: “compelete,” “Eversince,” “shot circuit,” “continues,” and “alernative.” Some expressions are also unnatural, such as “express my dissatisfaction through this letter for the product” and “accept the consideration.” Choose more conventional complaint-letter collocations and check spelling carefully. More precise terms for the device failure and its consequences would also help. Your vocabulary is sufficient to communicate the main message, but accuracy and natural phrasing need more consistent control.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mixture of simple and more complex sentence forms, including the time clause “since I have started doing work from home” and the conditional-style request “if you need more information.” The main message remains understandable, but errors occur in verb forms, agreement, articles, and sentence construction. For example, “it get shot circuit” needs a correctly formed verb phrase, and “All the work have been lost” has a subject–verb agreement problem. “I have been using wifi dongle” also needs an article before the singular countable noun. Some sentences, particularly “Not even USB port went bad but also it affected the battery,” are difficult to parse. Review these patterns and aim for more consistently accurate complex sentences.
