Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Sir or Madam,

My name is Kamaljeet Kaur, and I am a resident of Tamarack. I have been working in a company, Inbound Communications, as Data Analyst. I am writing to express my dissatisfaction with the computer system that I bought from your store, last month.

As I am working from home and all the office work I manage online. Two days ago, when I was working on computer system I noticed the screen suddenly turned blur and took a while to get back to the working page. Initially, I thought it might be due to continous long working hours. But later I discovered that it is happenning like after every one or two hours.

As I mentioned that I manage all the office from home, it includes online meetings with the clients, emails, presentations, etc. With the blur screen I am unable to continue my work smoothly, it not only causing distraction to my work by interrupting the ongoing meetings with the clients but also delaying my work and causing frustration to me.

I would therefore like to request that either replace the faulty monitor with a new one or give me a full refund of the cost that I had paid you. The bill receipt number is [redacted phone]. Moreover, please ensure that you will check the equipment thoroughly before delivering them.

I hope you will look into this matter seriously and respond positively. Thank you for your time and consideration.

Yours faithfully,

Kamaljeet Kaur

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 8.0

The letter fulfils all three requirements clearly. You describe the fault as a screen that becomes blurred and takes time to return to the working page, explain its effects on client meetings and deadlines, and make a specific request for either a replacement monitor or a refund. The receipt number also helps the company act on your complaint. The purpose and appropriately formal tone remain clear throughout, and the problem is supported with relevant details, including when it began and how often it occurs. To make the request even more complete, specify whether you prefer replacement or refund, and indicate how the company should arrange the next step, such as contacting you to inspect or collect the equipment.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.5

The letter is organised effectively into an introduction, a description of the fault, its impact, and a request, followed by a suitable closing. This sequence makes the message easy to follow, and links such as “Initially,” “But later,” and “I would therefore” help show the relationship between events and your request. The paragraphing is appropriate for a formal letter. Some connections are less smooth: “As I am working from home and all the office work I manage online” is an incomplete opening, and “As I mentioned” refers back to information that was only briefly stated. A more direct transition, such as “Because I work from home,” would make the progression more natural and less dependent on repeated references.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.5

You use an adequate range of vocabulary for a complaint, including “dissatisfaction,” “interrupting,” “delaying,” “full refund,” and “thoroughly.” These choices communicate the issue and its consequences clearly, and you attempt some more formal language appropriate to the recipient. However, several expressions are imprecise or unnatural, such as “screen turned blur,” “get back to the working page,” and “manage all the office from home.” There are also spelling errors in “continous” and “happenning.” These do not prevent understanding, but they limit the accuracy and naturalness of the vocabulary. Aim for precise collocations such as “the screen became blurred” and “carry out my office work from home,” and proofread spelling carefully.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and more complex sentence forms, including the contrast in “Initially, I thought … But later I discovered…” and the paired structure “not only … but also.” The message remains understandable, but some grammatical errors occur. “As I am working from home and all the office work I manage online” is a sentence fragment; “as a Data Analyst” needs an article; and “it is happenning like after every one or two hours” has an incorrect verb form and awkward sentence structure. In “it not only causing distraction,” the verb phrase needs “is,” while “the cost that I had paid you” uses an unsuitable tense pattern. Build complete clauses and check articles, auxiliary verbs, and tense choices to improve accuracy while retaining your sentence variety.
