Dear Sir or Madam,

Student answer (Band 7.0)

I am writing to complain about a keyboard that my company bought from your shop two months ago.

I have been working from home for Revital Health. Over the past week, my keyboard has stopped working unexpectedly, even when the battery is fully charged. In addition, it becomes extremely slow when I put several commands at the same time and sometimes it types wrong alphabetes. I have tried restart the device and also installing latest update but unfortunately, the problem still presists.

The issue is seriously affecting my work because i am unable to attend my online meetings without any interuption. I have also missed a few work deadline because keyboard stopped working suddendly, while i was completing my important projects. As a result, i am becoming concerned that this could affect my productivity and professional responsibilities.

I would therefore appreciate it if you could arrange an inspection as soon as possible. If the problem cannot be repaired promptly, i would prefer to receive a replacement device of the same model or a full refund. I have attached a copy of the receipt and would be greateful if you could deal with this matter urgently.

Your Faithfully,

Ashu Dhiman

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 8.5

The letter covers all three requirements clearly: you describe the keyboard’s intermittent failure, explain its effect on meetings and deadlines, and request an inspection followed by a replacement or refund. The details about the battery being fully charged and the unsuccessful restart and update attempts make the complaint convincing and well developed. Your requested action is also appropriately specific and urgent. To make the response even more complete, you could clarify whether the keyboard is wireless or identify any warranty or purchase details beyond mentioning the receipt. Overall, the purpose and tone are consistently clear, with only a small opportunity to add practical detail.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.5

The information is arranged in a clear sequence: the reason for writing, the equipment problem, its impact, and the remedy you want. Separate paragraphs help the reader follow each stage, and linking phrases such as “In addition,” “As a result,” and “therefore” make the relationships between ideas clear. The progression is logical throughout. Some connections are slightly repetitive or could be more precise—for example, “The issue is seriously affecting my work because” leads into two related consequences that could be grouped more smoothly. You could also use a more conventional closing and ensure the sign-off is clearly separated from the request. These refinements would make the organisation feel more polished and less formulaic.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of vocabulary for a formal complaint, including “unexpectedly,” “interruption,” “productivity,” “professional responsibilities,” and “replacement device.” These choices communicate the problem and its consequences effectively, and the tone is generally suitable. However, several spelling and word-choice errors reduce precision: “alphabetes,” “presists,” “interuption,” “suddendly,” and “greateful” should be corrected. Some phrasing is also less natural, such as “attend my online meetings without any interruption” and “missed a few work deadline.” Aim for accurate spelling and more natural collocations, particularly when describing technical faults and work consequences. This would make the vocabulary more controlled and professional.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

The letter includes a useful mix of simple and complex sentences. For example, “If the problem cannot be repaired promptly, I would prefer to receive a replacement device…” uses a conditional structure effectively, while the sentence beginning “Over the past week” combines several details about the fault. Some grammatical errors remain, although the meaning is generally clear. In “I have tried restart the device,” use “tried restarting” or “tried to restart”; “installing latest update” needs an article, as in “installing the latest update.” There are also inconsistent capital letters for “I,” and “missed a few work deadline” needs a plural noun. Proofreading these patterns would improve accuracy while preserving your sentence variety.
