Dear Sir or Madam,
Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writing to let you know about the table issue, I am suffering from. The hydrolics of the table are not working since last Monday. The table stucks at one place and cannot lift it up or down with the buttons provided on the table.
Although I can use the table while sitting, I cannot sit all the time to do work. Not only did I get pain in my back, but it did also hurt my knees for sitting to long in same position. As a result, I am unable to give my full concentration on office work.
Consequently, I believe that a professional mechenic would fix the hydrolics. I would recommend to arrange a visit of a professional mechanic to look the hydrolics. In addition to this, please provide another pair of hydrolics in case the mechanics would unable to repair the old ones.
I look forward to hearing a positive response as soon as possible.
Yours Sincerely,
Mike Smith.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
You address all three requirements clearly: you explain that the table’s height-adjustment mechanism has stopped working, describe the resulting discomfort and reduced concentration, and request a mechanic’s visit plus replacement parts if repair is not possible. The purpose and desired outcome are clear throughout, and the effects on your work make the complaint relevant and convincing. To strengthen the response further, make the requested action more precise—for example, ask the company to arrange a visit within a particular timeframe and clarify whether the equipment is still under warranty. The request for “another pair” of parts is also somewhat unclear, so specify exactly what should be replaced if the mechanism cannot be repaired.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The letter has a clear progression from the equipment fault, to its impact on your work, and then to the action you want the company to take. Paragraphing supports this sequence, and linking expressions such as “Although,” “As a result,” and “Consequently” help show relationships between ideas. This is a coherent overall arrangement. However, some connections feel mechanical or repetitive: “Consequently” and “I would recommend” introduce closely related requests, while “In addition to this” adds a contingency that could be integrated more smoothly. The opening sentence also joins two clauses with a comma, which interrupts the flow. More natural transitions and clearer links between the repair request and the replacement option would make the progression more fluent.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use enough vocabulary to communicate the complaint and its consequences, including “full concentration,” “professional mechanic,” and “positive response.” However, the range is limited in places, and several spelling or word-choice errors reduce precision: “hydrolics” is misspelled, “mechenic” is incorrect, and “the table issue” is less natural than a more specific description of the fault. “The table stucks at one place” is also an awkward collocation, and “another pair of hydrolics” does not clearly identify the part required. Choose precise equipment terms and check spelling carefully. More natural phrases such as “height-adjustment mechanism” and “the table is stuck at one height” would make the complaint clearer and more professional.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and more complex forms, including the contrast in “Although I can use the table while sitting” and the paired structure “Not only did I get pain … but it did also hurt my knees.” The main message remains understandable, but some grammatical errors occur. In “I am writing to let you know about the table issue, I am suffering from,” the relative clause is awkwardly placed and the clauses are joined with a comma. “The table stucks” needs a passive form (“is stuck”), while “I cannot lift it up or down” needs a clear subject. There are also errors in “sitting to long in same position” and “the mechanics would unable to repair.” Review clause boundaries, articles, and verb forms, while retaining the complex structures you are attempting.
