Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writing to you in regard of the laptop that i bought from your company last month which i am using to do my work from home job.
For the first week it works properly but after that it gives so much problem like while doing job its window shut down automatically and when I turn on the laptop it takes so much time. Secondly, its keypad does not work properly.
Due to this problem I am not able to complete my daily work properly which will cause future problems in my company. I will not be able to get any senior management position if this happening every day.
I want you to please replace this laptop or give me a new one because this laptop is very costly and I bought specifically due to its features.
I look forward to hearing from you.
Yours faithfully,
Bhanu

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
You address all three requirements: you identify the laptop’s automatic shutdowns and slow start-up, explain that these prevent you from completing daily work, and request a replacement. The purpose is clear throughout, and the detail that you bought it for its features helps explain your expectation. To make the response more fully developed, clarify the impact on your work with a specific example, such as missed deadlines or interrupted tasks. The point about not receiving a senior management position is less directly connected to the equipment problem and is presented as a prediction; a more immediate, concrete consequence would strengthen the explanation. You could also specify when the faults began and ask the company to arrange a replacement or repair within a reasonable timeframe.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The letter follows a clear sequence: you introduce the purchase, describe the faults, explain their effect, and state the action you want. This logical progression makes your purpose easy to follow. The transition “Secondly” helps distinguish the keypad fault from the shutdown and slow start-up, while “Due to this problem” links the faults to their consequences. To improve the flow further, use separate paragraphs for the problem, its impact, and your requested solution. The opening sentence is long and contains several pieces of information, so dividing it would make the introduction easier to process. The relationship between the work difficulties and the possible promotion is also not fully explained; a clearer link would make that section more cohesive.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
Your vocabulary is sufficient to communicate the main issue, using relevant terms such as “laptop,” “keypad,” “daily work,” and “replace.” However, the range is limited, and several expressions are imprecise or unnatural for a formal complaint. For example, “gives so much problem” and “its window shut down” do not describe the faults clearly, while “work from home job” is awkwardly phrased. More precise language would help you explain the technical problem and its impact without relying on general wording such as “so much time” and “very costly.” Aim for natural collocations and a consistently formal tone, for example by describing the laptop as “shutting down unexpectedly” and the start-up as “taking several minutes.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You communicate the main message using a mixture of simple statements and longer sentences, and the letter’s meaning remains understandable. However, control of verb forms and sentence construction is inconsistent. In “For the first week it works properly but after that it gives,” the past-time sequence calls for past forms; “worked” and “started giving” would be more appropriate. The clause “which will cause future problems” shifts tense, and “if this happening every day” is missing a finite verb. The opening sentence also contains several clauses joined together, making its structure difficult to control. Practise keeping time references consistent and building complex sentences with complete clauses. Check capitalisation and punctuation as well, including the lowercase “i.”
