Dear Sir or Madam,
Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Sir/ Madam,
I writing this letter to express my disappointment regarding a desktop which a recently purchased
from your shop.
I bought a hp desktop yesterday. Initially, it was functioning absolutely fine. However , this morning a discovered a blur screen and the sound quality was terrible. I was disheartened when i noticed the such a poor condition of a equipment.
I work remotely and my work is largely dependent on the desktop. I attend daily meetings with my clients. With regards to the nature of my job it is impossible without a desktop. I am struggling to manage my work without it. Unfortunately, i have lost revenue because of this unexpected issue.
I would appreciate it if immediate investigation is considered and a urgent replacement is initiated. I would be greatful if a service man is arranged to collect the faulty equipment from the same address where it was delivered.
Thanking you .
Yours faithfully,
komal

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5
The letter clearly addresses all three requirements: you identify the desktop’s blurred screen and poor sound, explain that remote meetings and other work are affected, and request an investigation, replacement, and collection. The impact is made specific by mentioning client meetings and lost revenue, while the requested action is clear and appropriately formal. This gives the reader a consistent understanding of the problem and your desired outcome. To make the response more fully developed, clarify whether you want the company to replace the desktop immediately or first inspect and repair it; the current request for both an investigation and an urgent replacement leaves the sequence slightly uncertain. You could also specify when the fault appeared or provide a purchase reference.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The information follows a clear, practical sequence: the purchase and fault are introduced first, the effect on your work follows, and the final paragraph states what you want the company to do. Paragraphing supports this progression, and links such as “However” and “Unfortunately” help signal contrast and consequence. The letter is easy to follow overall. Some connections are less smooth, however: “With regards to the nature of my job it is impossible without a desktop” repeats the preceding point rather than developing it, and the shift from requesting an investigation to an urgent replacement could be linked more clearly. Use a more precise transition or explain which action should happen first, and keep punctuation around linking phrases consistent.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of vocabulary for a formal complaint, including “express my disappointment,” “functioning,” “remote,” “revenue,” and “faulty equipment.” These choices communicate the situation and its consequences clearly, and the tone is generally suitable for writing to a supplier. Some word choices and combinations are inaccurate or unnatural, such as “blur screen,” “a desktop,” “a service man,” and “immediate investigation is considered.” Spelling errors in “greatful” and inconsistent capitalisation of “HP” also reduce accuracy. Aim for standard product and service terminology, and check collocations before using formal phrases. More precise wording would make the complaint sound more natural and professional without requiring unnecessarily complex vocabulary.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The letter includes both simple statements and more developed structures, such as “I would appreciate it if…” and “I would be grateful if…,” which suit a formal request. Meaning remains understandable, but errors in basic sentence construction and grammar prevent consistently accurate control. For example, “I writing this letter” needs a finite verb, and “a recently purchased” is missing its subject. There are also errors in articles and agreement in “I noticed the such a poor condition of a equipment,” as well as inconsistent capitalisation of the pronoun “I.” Review complete sentence structure, article use, and verb forms, then proofread punctuation and spacing around commas. Accurate control of these basics would strengthen the otherwise clear message.
