Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I ma writing this letter to file a complaint regarding laptop delivered by your firm in August 2026. I use this laptop for my remote job as an private tutor on Preply and recently, I have been facing several technical issues with the device.

Although the laptop worked really effortless in the initial first two months, it is giving me a hard time now. While using it for long durations, it freezes and overheats as well. Everytime, when I have long classes, I have to leave the meetings in the middle and then rejoin, which wastes my a lot of time. Additionally, from a couple of days, it has been showing me the storage issue as well which can be certain as it is a new product.

Owing to the freezing and overheating problem, I was unable to use it for long hours and missed my deadlines. Afterthat I had to take a few days off from work. Furthermore, I got it checked from the technical department of your company over phone but it was not helpful either.

Given the circumstances, I request you to please provide me with a proper solution to the issue. If you could fix the device, then please arrange someone to get it done or just replace it.

I look forward to your response.

Yours faithfully,

Komal

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 8.0

The letter covers all three requirements clearly: you describe the laptop freezing, overheating and reporting a storage problem; explain that you must leave and rejoin lessons and have missed deadlines; and request a repair or replacement. The details about your remote tutoring work and the unsuccessful phone support make the complaint specific and persuasive. Your purpose and requested outcome remain clear throughout, and the tone is appropriately formal. To make the response even more complete, specify a practical next step or timeframe—for example, asking the company to arrange collection or provide a replacement by a particular date. This would sharpen the request, although the main task points are already well addressed and developed.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The letter is organised in a clear sequence: opening and context, description of the faults, their effect on your work, and a request for action. Paragraphing supports this progression, and links such as “Additionally,” “Furthermore,” and “Given the circumstances” help the reader follow your points. The connection between the technical faults and their consequences is especially clear. Some transitions are slightly mechanical, and “Afterthat” is not correctly spaced; also, “Although” introduces a contrast that is not fully developed. For a stronger, more natural flow, use fewer formulaic connectors and make the relationship between each point explicit, such as linking the storage warning directly to the work files or lessons it affects.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.5

You use a suitable range of vocabulary for a formal complaint, including “technical issues,” “overheats,” “deadlines,” and “replace it.” These choices communicate the problem and its impact effectively, and the tone is generally appropriate. There are, however, several inaccurate or unnatural expressions that limit precision: “worked really effortless,” “giving me a hard time,” “wastes my a lot of time,” and “showing me the storage issue.” “Certain” is also not the right word for the intended meaning in “which can be certain.” Aim for more precise collocations, such as saying the laptop “ran smoothly,” “displays a storage warning,” or “causes considerable disruption.” Correcting the spelling and spacing in “Everytime” and “Afterthat” would also improve control.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

The letter includes a useful mix of sentence forms, including a concessive opening (“Although the laptop…”), a time clause (“While using it…”), and conditional requests (“If you could fix the device…”). Most sentences are understandable, and the message is not impeded. Some grammatical errors remain, however: “I ma writing” should be “I am writing”; “as an private tutor” needs “a”; and “wastes my a lot of time” has an incorrect determiner structure. The sentence beginning “Everytime, when…” also uses an unnecessary comma and an awkward clause pattern. Review articles, verb forms and sentence construction, and proofread carefully for small errors. More consistently accurate complex sentences would strengthen the overall control.
