Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I hope this letter finds you well. I am writing to express my dissatisfaction regarding the mouse I purchased for my computer. I have bought this product two months ago. However, it worked well in starting but now from last few days it is not working. It is a bluetooth mouse. The major issue is its cursor is not moving.

This problem is occuring repeatedly since sometimes it works and sometimes it stops working in between my work. It is problematic for me because I cannot focus on my tasks. Moreover, yesterday I couldn't even complete my important work commitment.

I kindly request you to refund my money or replace the purchase with the correct equipment. I hope you will understand my situation and resolve this issue at your earliest convenience. I have attached purchased reciept with this letter and Please let me know if you may refund or replace product online or do I need to visit the store.

Thank for your kind consideration.

Yours faithfully,

Jasmeen

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5

The letter clearly addresses all three requirements: you identify the faulty Bluetooth mouse and its cursor problem, explain that it interrupts your work and prevented you from completing an important commitment, and request either a refund or a replacement. The purpose and desired outcome remain clear throughout, and mentioning the receipt and asking whether the process can be handled online adds useful practical detail. The impact on your work is supported with a specific example, rather than being left entirely general. To develop the response further, briefly state when or how you have tried to resolve the fault, or specify whether you prefer a replacement or refund. This would make the request more fully developed while retaining the clear, appropriate tone.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The information follows a sensible order: you introduce the purchase and fault, describe its effect on your work, and then make a request. Paragraphing helps distinguish the problem from its consequences and the action you want. Linking expressions such as “However” and “Moreover” make the progression easy to follow, and the closing is appropriate for a formal letter. Some connections are less smooth because several details are packed into the final paragraph, particularly the refund/replacement request, receipt, and question about visiting the store. The opening also moves quickly from the purchase date to the fault. Separating the practical question into its own sentence and using clearer transitions between the fault and its impact would make the organisation more polished.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of vocabulary for a complaint letter, including “express my dissatisfaction,” “cursor,” “refund,” “replace,” and “resolve this issue.” These choices communicate the situation and requested remedy clearly, and the tone is generally suitable. There are, however, some inaccurate or unnatural choices that limit precision: “correct equipment” is unclear when you mean a replacement mouse, while “work commitment” is less natural than “work commitment” in this context would suggest; “important work task” is clearer. Spelling errors such as “occuring” and “reciept” also affect accuracy. Aim for precise product-related phrases and check spelling carefully; this will make the vocabulary more natural and professional.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mix of simple and more complex sentence forms, including the contrast in “However, it worked well in starting but now…” and the explanation beginning “because I cannot focus on my tasks.” The main message remains understandable, but some grammatical errors recur. For example, “I have bought this product two months ago” uses an unsuitable tense with a finished time reference; “I bought this product two months ago” is appropriate. “Since sometimes it works” is an awkward clause structure, and “Please” is incorrectly capitalised after “and” within the sentence. The final question also needs clearer sentence structure. Practise past simple versus present perfect and check sentence boundaries, capitalisation, and clause construction to improve control.
