Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I hope you are doing well. I am writing this letter to get a solution of an incovenience that I am facing with the use of mouse. I have been working here for 6 months and my mouse stop working in each and every hour, which causes delay to my work. I would like to share my experience in more detail in the following paragraph.
Mouse is very essential part of working remotely. Its very hard to use laptop's touchpad for 8 hours shift. To increase work effeciency and time management mouce is the great option. However, my mouce stop working in between, when I start making projects and diagram and then I have to start everything from start, which consume a lot of time. One noticeable thing is that I got left sided key damaged on the very first day, but my husband fixed it, but now that key is also stop working and I have to get a brand new mouce from a nearby store, which costs me $50.
I would really appreciate if I am eligible to get refund for my new mouce, and I apologize for any inconveniece this may cause.
Thank you very much for your time and consideration.
Kind regards,
Naiya Patel

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
You address all three required points: you describe the mouse’s intermittent failure and damaged button, explain that this delays work and disrupts projects, and request reimbursement for a replacement. The purpose is clear and the details about the touchpad and the $50 purchase help support your complaint. The main limitation is that the requested action is not fully precise: “if I am eligible to get refund” does not clearly state whether you want the supplier to reimburse the cost, repair the original mouse, or replace it. You could also identify the product or purchase date and ask directly for a specific remedy. Overall, the letter fulfils its purpose and develops the relevant points, though the request could be more explicit.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The letter follows a recognisable sequence: opening purpose, explanation of the work impact, request, and polite closing. Paragraphing helps separate the main stages, and links such as “However” and “but now” show contrast and progression. This gives the reader a clear overall route through the complaint. Some connections are less smooth, however: the sentence beginning “One noticeable thing” shifts from the current problem to the history of the damaged key without clearly explaining how the earlier repair relates to the present fault. The opening also promises “the following paragraph,” which is unnecessary and slightly mechanical. To strengthen progression, group the fault history together and connect it explicitly to the current failure and the remedy you seek.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use relevant vocabulary for the situation, including “working remotely,” “touchpad,” “delay,” “projects and diagram,” and “refund,” so the reader can understand the complaint. There are also attempts at more specific expressions, such as “time management” and “left sided key.” However, spelling and word-choice errors are noticeable, including “incovenience,” “effeciency,” “mouce,” and “inconveniece.” Some combinations are also unnatural: “a solution of an inconvenience” and “start everything from start” do not express the ideas idiomatically. Use standard terms such as “mouse button” and “replacement mouse,” and check spelling carefully. A more accurate and natural choice of collocations would make the letter sound more professional and reduce effort for the reader.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt both simple and longer sentence forms, for example, “However, my mouce stop working in between, when I start making projects and diagram and then I have to start everything from start.” This shows an effort to explain cause and consequence, but control is uneven. Verb forms and agreement need attention: “my mouse stop working” should be “my mouse stops/stopped working,” and “that key is also stop working” needs a form such as “has also stopped working.” Articles and sentence construction are also inaccurate in “Mouse is very essential part” and “Its very hard,” where “A mouse is an essential part” and “It’s very hard” are needed. Practise checking tense consistency, articles, and sentence boundaries; these corrections would make your meaning clearer and more polished.
