Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear sir,
I am writing this letter to complain about a computer that i bought from your shop last week. As the computer is being used for professional work, I had informed you some requirement like better sound system, storage, and camera quality etc.
The computer is malfunctioning and its camera focus only last for short time later on it gets vague and it does detact background noise which cause distractions. Moreover, it was supposed to have 7 hours playtime once it is charged However, it hardly work for 3 hours which leads to higher electricity cost.
The above mentioned problems makes work difficult to manage from home because when i arrange meeting with my staff poor video quality makes my presentation hard to understand on screen. Secondly, My house is near the main road and it usually detacts sounds from road like horn and vehicles sound which also stops me unmute the microphone.
As the product is in waranty, I just want you to take this equipment back and offer a brand new laptop. I am looking forward for your reply.
Your sincerely,
Arsh.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You address all three points: you describe the camera and battery problems, explain their effects on online meetings and presentations, and request a replacement under the warranty. The examples about poor video quality and road noise make the impact on your work clear. This meets the task well, though some details are less fully explained than others: for example, the sound issue is described, but its effect on your ability to communicate is not entirely clear. The request to take the equipment back and provide a new laptop is direct. To strengthen the letter further, specify the model or purchase details and state a clear timeframe or next step for resolving the complaint. The formal purpose is clear throughout, although the greeting and sign-off could be more conventionally matched.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The letter has a clear overall sequence: it introduces the complaint, describes the faults, explains their impact, and ends with the requested solution. Paragraphing helps distinguish these stages, and connectors such as “Moreover” and “Secondly” guide the reader through related points. Some linking is mechanical, however, and the relationship between ideas is occasionally unclear—for instance, the sentence about road noise and being unable to unmute the microphone needs a more explicit explanation. The opening paragraph also combines the purchase context with several equipment requirements, making the main complaint slightly less prominent. Use more precise references and transitions, and keep each paragraph focused on one function, to make the progression smoother and more controlled.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use enough vocabulary to communicate the complaint and its consequences, including “malfunctioning,” “distractions,” “presentation,” and “warranty.” However, several inaccurate word choices, spelling errors, and awkward collocations reduce precision: “vague” does not naturally describe camera focus, “playtime” is unsuitable for battery life, and “detacts” appears where “detects” is intended. Phrases such as “higher electricity cost” and “better sound system” are also imprecise in this context. These errors do not prevent the reader from understanding the main message, but they make the letter less natural and occasionally require interpretation. Build accuracy by learning common technology and complaint collocations, and proofread spelling and word forms carefully.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt a mix of simple and complex sentences, including clauses beginning “As” and “because,” and the main meaning is generally understandable. Some grammatical errors remain, particularly with agreement, verb forms, articles, and sentence boundaries. For example, “The above mentioned problems makes” should use a plural verb, while “it hardly work” needs a singular verb form. In “I had informed you some requirement,” the verb pattern and plural noun form are not controlled. Capitalisation of “i” and “My” is also inconsistent, and the sentence beginning “However” needs clearer punctuation. These issues rarely block communication, but more consistent editing and accurate control of clauses would improve the letter’s fluency.
