Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear sir,

I am wiriting this letter to express my concerns regarding the one of my computer screen that you supplied to me last week. I am Pankaj working in ABL infotech, and I recently came to know that your shop supplied these screens to our company.

When I recieved screens it was working prefectly, however after 3 days one screen suddenly shut down. Initially I assume it may be due to voltage fluctuation. But day after when I tried to start it, screen does not respond. Currently, I am managing with one screen, but my work involves multi-tasking, so it is important for me to work on two screens.

I request you to please arrange a new screen for me as soon as possible, because I am running behind on my projects and if possible to deliver it at my home address.

I hope you will address my conern at your earliest and please feel free to contact me for further questions.

Sincerly,

Pankaj

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

The letter addresses all three required points: it identifies the faulty screen, explains that working with one screen makes multitasking difficult and delays projects, and requests a replacement delivered to the writer’s home. The problem is described clearly, including that the screen worked at first and then stopped responding after three days. The request is direct and the purpose remains clear throughout. To strengthen the response further, make the requested action more precise—for example, ask the company to arrange a replacement by a particular date or confirm the delivery process. The impact on work could also be supported with a specific example of a task that is now taking longer.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The information follows a clear, logical sequence: the writer introduces the purchase, describes when the fault occurred, explains its effect on work, and then makes a request. Linking expressions such as “however,” “Initially,” and “Currently” help show the progression, while the closing is appropriate for a formal complaint. The main opportunity is to make the paragraphing and transitions more deliberate. The opening combines the purpose, the writer’s identity, and the company-supply detail in one block; separating the background from the fault would make the stages easier to follow. Also, “But day after” is an abrupt transition; “The following day” would connect the events more smoothly.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The vocabulary is adequate for explaining the equipment problem and its consequences, with useful task-related phrases such as “voltage fluctuation,” “multi-tasking,” and “running behind on my projects.” The writer also uses a suitably formal phrase, “I request you to please arrange.” However, some word choices and collocations are inaccurate or awkward, including “the one of my computer screen,” “came to know,” and “address my conern.” Spelling errors such as “wiriting,” “recieved,” “prefectly,” and “Sincerly” also reduce accuracy. Aim for more natural complaint-letter phrasing and check spelling carefully; for instance, “one of the computer screens” and “I recently learned” are clearer and more idiomatic.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The response uses a mix of simple and more complex sentence forms, including a time clause in “When I recieved screens it was working prefectly” and a conditional phrase in “if possible to deliver it at my home address.” The sequence of events is generally understandable, and errors rarely prevent the reader from following the message. Some grammatical problems remain: “When I recieved screens it was working” has an unclear subject and number agreement, while “I assume” and “screen does not respond” do not maintain the past-time sequence. The request clause “if possible to deliver it” is also incomplete. Use complete clauses and check tense consistency—for example, “The following day, when I tried to start it, the screen did not respond.”
