Dear Sir or Madam,
Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writing to complain about the printer I purchased recently from your store for my work chores. I would like the outline the issues I face everyday and some feasible suggestions to tackle this problem.
The purchase was made last week on October 26. It was a black HP Ultra laser printer, order number [redacted phone]. It was working perfectly on day one, but after two days it started restarting automatically. At the beginning I thought it is just a software issue, but the issue still persists after the system update. Also, I noticed some connection issue too, as it diconnect automatically after printing couple of pages.
Due to this, I have to visit local printing cafe to print my work documents, which is causing unnecessary interruption to my work efficiency. In additon, I have to pay extra money and time to fulfil my work tasks.
Nevertheless, I kindly request either a replacement of the product or refund the comlete amount of money spent on it. Moreover, any kind of discounted vouchers or store credits would be highly appreciated due to the inconvenience it caused.
I look forward to you prompt response.
Yours faithfully,
Satmeet Singh

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5
The letter clearly addresses all three requirements: you describe the printer’s automatic restarting and connection failures, explain that you must use a local printing café and lose time and money, and request a replacement or refund. The order number and purchase date also make the complaint specific, while the polite closing suits a formal letter. Your requested remedies are clear, although the additional request for vouchers or store credit is less directly developed and slightly dilutes the main request. To strengthen the response further, state which remedy you prefer and briefly explain why it is appropriate, while keeping the compensation request secondary.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The information follows a clear, useful sequence: purpose of writing, details of the fault, its effect on your work, and the action you want. Separate paragraphs help the reader follow these stages, and linking phrases such as “Due to this” and “In addition” make relationships between ideas clear. The progression is generally logical, though “Nevertheless” does not express the contrast intended before your request; “Therefore” or “For this reason” would connect the problem to the remedy more accurately. The opening also promises “suggestions,” but the letter mainly makes requests. More precise transitions and a closer match between signposting and content would make the cohesion more flexible and natural.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.5
You use an adequate range of vocabulary for a formal complaint, including “automatically,” “persists,” “interruption,” and “replacement,” and the technical details make the problem easy to understand. Some less common or formal expressions are attempted, but several choices are inaccurate or unnatural: “work chores” is not a natural way to describe professional tasks, “feasible suggestions to tackle this problem” does not fit the letter’s purpose, and “discounted vouchers” is an awkward compensation phrase. There are also spelling errors in “diconnect,” “additon,” and “comlete.” These do not prevent understanding, but careful proofreading and more natural collocations would improve precision and control.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5
The letter includes both straightforward statements and more developed sentences, such as the sentence explaining that the printer worked initially but began restarting after two days. Meaning remains clear throughout, but some grammatical errors prevent consistently accurate control. Examples include “I would like the outline” (the verb pattern should be “would like to outline”), “I thought it is just a software issue” (tense agreement calls for “was”), and “after printing couple of pages” (a determiner is needed before “couple”). In “I look forward to you prompt response,” the possessive form should be “your.” Review verb patterns, tense consistency, and articles or possessives, then proofread sentence endings and punctuation.
