Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writing this letter to express my dissatisfaction with the laptop I bouught from your store two weeks ago. I am working from home, so I needed the reliable laptop for my work.
This device have been hanged when multiple programms were opened, which I needed to open at same time for my project. Also it has issues with microphone and speakers. Which are stop producing sound in between the operation.
Because of such defects, I am unable to attend meetings. My collegues can not hear me properly and I coudn't explain important details about project, which leads me to arrange in person meeting for the given assignment. Which adversely affect my performance.
I would appreciate it if you could look into this matter and provide me better solution for the inconvinence. Also, I would be pleased if you send technician to service it or replace it under warranty.
Yours faithfully,
Harsh Patel

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5
You address all three requirements clearly: you identify the laptop and its faults, explain that the microphone and speakers disrupt meetings and that you have had to arrange an in-person meeting, and request a technician or a replacement under warranty. The purpose and tone are appropriate for a formal complaint, and the specific examples make the impact on your work clear. To make the response more fully developed, specify what outcome you prefer and give the company a practical next step, such as asking them to contact you to arrange a repair or replacement. The request for a “better solution” is less precise than the later options, so stating your preferred remedy directly would strengthen the letter’s effectiveness.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The letter follows a clear progression from the reason for writing, to the equipment faults, to their effect on your work and your requested remedy. Paragraphing supports this sequence, and phrases such as “Because of such defects” help connect cause and consequence. However, some sentence boundaries interrupt the flow: “Which are stop producing sound…” and “Which adversely affect my performance” are fragments rather than complete sentences. The final request also moves quickly from a general solution to two specific options. Join related ideas into complete sentences and use clearer transitions between the impact and the remedy to make the progression smoother and more controlled.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use relevant vocabulary for the situation, including “dissatisfaction,” “defects,” “attend meetings,” and “under warranty,” so the reader can understand the complaint and its consequences. However, the range and control are limited by noticeable spelling and word-choice errors, including “bouught,” “programms,” “collegues,” and “inconvinence.” Some expressions are also unnatural or imprecise: “the reliable laptop,” “hanged,” and “provide me better solution” do not sound idiomatic in this context. Choose standard collocations such as “a reliable laptop,” “freezes,” and “offer me a suitable solution,” and proofread spelling carefully. More precise vocabulary would make the complaint sound more professional.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt both simple and more extended sentence forms, for example, explaining the faults and then linking them to their effect on your work. However, errors in verb forms, agreement, articles, and sentence construction are frequent enough to make parts of the letter awkward. Examples include “This device have been hanged,” “Which are stop producing sound,” and “Which adversely affect my performance.” The opening also needs an article in “I needed the reliable laptop.” Avoid beginning a sentence with “Which” when it depends on the previous clause; instead, connect the idea with a relative clause or conjunction. Review subject–verb agreement and past participles, and check that each sentence has a complete main clause.
