Dear Sir or Madam,

Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing to inform you that one of the major part of my computer is not working efficiently; I am talking about the screen. The make is Samsung; it measures 32 inches in length and 8 inches in width.

I would like to mention the problem from the scratch. On last saturday, when I tried to start my computer, the screen was black eventhough the processor was working fine. Although I have worked on several electronic devices, so I can confidently claim, it is not a wiring problem. Most probably, the issue is with the hardware.

Currently, I am working from home and this issue is affecting my productivity at work. I have a few presentations pending to sumbit. Also, I am unable to access any company portal.

I would therefore be grateful if you could make a replacement of the screen, so that I can restart my work and finish the pending assignments.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Yours faithfully,

Harshdeep Singh

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5

The letter addresses all three requirements clearly: you identify the faulty screen, explain that it prevents you from completing presentations and accessing the company portal, and request a replacement. The opening and closing are appropriate for a formal complaint, and the reader can understand the practical urgency. The description of the fault is also supported with useful details, including when it began and that the processor still works. To make the request more fully developed, specify what action you expect the supplier to take next—for example, arranging collection, installation, or a repair if replacement is not possible. The screen dimensions are precise, but a brief reference to the purchase or warranty could be more directly useful.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.5

The information follows a clear, logical sequence: you introduce the equipment and fault, describe when it occurred, explain its effect on your work, and then state your request. Paragraphing helps distinguish these stages, while phrases such as “Currently” and “I would therefore” guide the reader through the letter. The progression is easy to follow and the formal opening and closing frame it appropriately. Some linking is slightly mechanical, particularly the transition “I would like to mention the problem from the scratch,” which does not sound natural in this context. You could improve the flow by moving directly from the opening to the incident and using a more precise transition, such as “The problem began last Saturday.”

Lexical Resource: Band 6.5

You use an adequate range of vocabulary for a formal service complaint, including “productivity,” “presentations pending,” “company portal,” and “replacement.” These choices communicate the problem and its consequences clearly. There are, however, several inaccurate or unnatural expressions that limit precision: “one of the major part” and “make a replacement of the screen” do not collocate correctly, while “from the scratch” is not the appropriate phrase here. Spelling errors such as “sumbit” and “eventhough” also show that word forms and written conventions need closer checking. Aim for natural service-related phrases, such as “the screen has stopped working” and “replace the screen,” and proofread for spelling before submitting.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

The letter includes a mix of simple and more complex sentence forms, and several sentences are controlled well, such as “I have a few presentations pending to sumbit” and “I look forward to hearing from you.” The use of a conditional purpose clause in “so that I can restart my work” also shows some range. Some grammatical errors remain: “one of the major part” has incorrect number agreement, and “Although I have worked on several electronic devices, so I can confidently claim” combines two linking structures incorrectly. The sentence about the screen being black also needs clearer punctuation and sentence boundaries. Review agreement and avoid using “although” and “so” together; these corrections would make the varied structures more consistently accurate.
