Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response addresses both parts of the prompt, identifying benefits (personal growth, photography, education) and disadvantages (health risks, environmental damage). The position is clear throughout. However, the development of ideas is somewhat uneven. While the environmental impact is well-supported with the example of plastic waste, the benefits section relies on a list of points that could be more deeply explored. The conclusion introduces new information regarding scientists and researchers, which was not mentioned in the body paragraphs, making the argument slightly disjointed. Overall, the response covers all requirements but would benefit from more balanced and cohesive development of the points raised.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The essay is logically organized into paragraphs, each with a clear focus. Cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'Consequently', 'Moreover', and 'In conclusion' are used to guide the reader. However, the use of these devices is sometimes mechanical or slightly repetitive. Referencing is occasionally unclear, such as in the phrase 'this kind of trips', which lacks proper grammatical agreement. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the benefits and disadvantages. To reach a higher band, the student should aim for more sophisticated transitions that link ideas more fluidly rather than relying on standard list-like connectors.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing the student to express ideas clearly. There are attempts to use topic-specific vocabulary like 'naturally conserved locations', 'marine creature', and 'extinction'. However, there are frequent errors in word formation and collocation, such as 'sever cold weather' (severe), 'tremendous benefits' (a tremendous benefit), and 'posses life-threating' (pose life-threatening). Some phrasing is slightly unnatural, such as 'inculcate important capabilities'. While the range is sufficient to convey meaning, the recurring errors in word choice and spelling prevent the response from reaching a higher band.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. However, there are frequent grammatical errors throughout the text, particularly with subject-verb agreement and pluralization, such as 'this trend gain' (gains), 'this kind of trips' (these kinds of trips), and 'travelling are' (is). Punctuation is generally functional, but there are missing articles and incorrect preposition usage, such as 'adjust with' (adjust to). While the meaning is rarely obscured, the frequency of these errors indicates a lack of control over complex structures, keeping the score in the 6.0 range.
