Today more and more tourists are visiting places where conditions are difficult, such as the Sahara desert or the Antarctic.

What are the benefits and disadvantages for tourists who visit such places?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Nowadays, tourists prefer to visit the places which are not normal tourist spots. Although it can turn into a dangerous decision, there are a few positives of visiting such places.

Firstly, in 21st century people enjoy thrill in their lives. Visiting a place which is full of hurdles not only boosts the confidence of travelers but also encourage them to conquer more of such places. Apart from this, such visits give them a chance to explore totally different life style. For example I am from Kashmir , a cold area in India and I was totally amazed by the life people are living in the Sahara dessert of Rajasthan.

However, the thrilling trips can lead to life threating events as well. New travelers are not aware of the path and the difficulties that can occur on the way which sometimes result in physical injuries and even death in some cases. For example many climbers have lost their lives climbing the Mount Everest. Additionally, visiting places full of difficulties is not economical. People do spend a lot of money to reach such places which is wastage of money. Money plays an important role in life and can be saved for a stable future.

My cousin brother wanted to be a climber. Without proper training while trying to climb Mount Abu, he slipped from significant height, sustaining serious head injuries.

In the end, every coin has two sides. Even though visiting thrilling places has benefits, negatives can not be unseen as well. So, travelers should plan their visits very carefully, all necessary items for the trips should be carried along and proper training should be taken if needed,

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses both the benefits and disadvantages of visiting extreme locations. You have provided relevant points, such as the thrill and personal growth (benefits) versus physical danger and financial cost (disadvantages). However, the development of these ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, the point about financial cost is a bit brief and could have been expanded to discuss the environmental impact or the opportunity cost of such travel. The personal example about your cousin is relevant but feels slightly disconnected from the broader argument about tourism. To reach a higher band, ensure that each point is fully explored with more depth and analytical detail.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each with a distinct focus. You use some cohesive devices like 'Firstly', 'Apart from this', 'However', and 'Additionally' to guide the reader. However, the flow between sentences is occasionally mechanical, and some transitions feel a bit abrupt. The concluding paragraph is quite short and ends with an incomplete sentence structure, which affects the overall coherence. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring that ideas flow more naturally from one to the next would enhance the cohesion of your writing.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'hurdles', 'economical', and 'sustaining'. There are some minor errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'life threating events' (should be 'life-threatening') and 'not normal tourist spots' (could be 'unconventional' or 'off-the-beaten-track'). While you attempt to use more sophisticated language, the control is not always consistent. To improve, focus on using more precise collocations and ensuring that your vocabulary choices are consistently natural and accurate throughout the essay.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors, such as 'in 21st century' (missing 'the'), 'encourage them' (should be 'encourages'), and 'negatives can not be unseen' (awkward phrasing). Punctuation is also inconsistent, with some missing commas and an incomplete final sentence. While these errors do not significantly impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and refining your use of articles would significantly improve your accuracy.
