Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response addresses both the benefits and disadvantages of visiting extreme environments. The ideas are relevant, such as the desire for unique experiences and the risks of cultural insensitivity or physical danger. However, the development is somewhat limited. For instance, the example regarding the '70% of younger generation' in America lacks specific context or relevance to the Sahara or Antarctic. The position is clear, but the arguments could be more deeply explored to reach a higher band. The response covers all parts of the prompt, but the supporting details are occasionally generic or slightly disconnected from the specific examples provided.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, each with a clear focus. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'To expound', 'On the flip side', and 'In conclusion', though some transitions feel slightly mechanical. There is a clear progression of ideas from the introduction to the conclusion. However, referencing is occasionally imprecise, such as the use of 'of whom' in the first paragraph, which does not correctly refer back to 'places'. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the benefits from the disadvantages, which helps the reader follow the argument easily.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing the writer to convey their meaning clearly. There are some attempts at less common vocabulary, such as 'adrealine' (misspelled) and 'sacared' (misspelled). Other word choice errors occur, such as 'appeals to be delecious' instead of 'appears to be delicious'. While the range is sufficient to discuss the topic, the frequent spelling errors and occasional awkward collocations prevent the response from reaching a higher band. The vocabulary is functional but lacks the precision and sophistication required for a Band 7 or above.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. However, there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally distract the reader. Examples include subject-verb agreement issues ('conditions for surviving is difficult', '70% of younger generation likes'), incorrect preposition usage ('journey to such destinations with lack of knowledge'), and awkward phrasing ('if it is not dealt in a timely manner'). While these errors do not impede overall communication, they are persistent throughout the text. A wider range of error-free complex structures would be needed to achieve a higher score.
