Student answer (Band 8.0)
Today, more and more tourists are visiting places where conditions are difficult, such as the Sahara Desert or Antarctica. Although these destinations can provide unique experiences and educational benefits, they also involve several risks and disadvantages.
One major benefit of visiting such places is that tourists can experience nature in a completely different way. For example, travelling to the Sahara allows people to see vast deserts, traditional communities and unique wildlife. Similarly, a trip to Antarctica can give visitors the opportunity to observe glaciers, penguins and other animals in their natural environment. Such experiences can increase people's knowledge of geography, wildlife and climate change. In addition, tourism can create employment and income for local guides, transportation companies and other businesses.
However, travelling to extreme environments also has significant disadvantages. The harsh weather conditions can be dangerous, particularly for people who are not physically prepared. In the Sahara, tourists may suffer from extreme heat and dehydration, while Antarctica presents risks because of extremely low temperatures and unpredictable weather. Furthermore, increased tourism can damage fragile ecosystems. For instance, large numbers of visitors in Antarctica may disturb wildlife and contribute to pollution if tourism is not carefully controlled.
In my opinion, the benefits of visiting difficult destinations can outweigh the disadvantages if tourism is managed responsibly. Tourists should follow environmental rules, use experienced guides and avoid activities that can harm wildlife or natural habitats. Governments and tourism companies should also limit visitor numbers in particularly sensitive areas.
In conclusion, visiting extreme destinations can provide unforgettable experiences, education and economic benefits, but it can also expose tourists to serious dangers and harm fragile environments. Therefore, responsible and well-regulated tourism is essential in such places.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0
The response fully addresses all parts of the prompt. You have clearly identified both the benefits (educational value, economic growth) and the disadvantages (physical danger, environmental damage) of visiting extreme locations. Your position is consistent throughout, and the conclusion effectively synthesises your main points. The ideas are well-developed with relevant examples, such as mentioning the Sahara and Antarctica specifically. To reach a higher band, you could further extend the discussion on the economic impact or the specific nature of the environmental damage to provide even more depth to your arguments.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0
The essay is logically organised with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph has a central theme, and the transition between the benefits and the drawbacks is handled smoothly using the cohesive device 'However'. You use a range of linking words effectively, such as 'Similarly', 'Furthermore', and 'In addition'. The paragraphing is appropriate, and the overall structure is easy to follow. The flow is natural, and the use of referencing is precise, ensuring that the reader can easily track the development of your argument from the introduction to the conclusion.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.0
You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary that is appropriate for the topic. Phrases like 'fragile ecosystems', 'unpredictable weather', and 'well-regulated tourism' show a good command of topic-specific language. While the vocabulary is accurate and sufficient, it is generally standard. To achieve a higher band, you could incorporate more sophisticated or less common collocations and idiomatic expressions to demonstrate greater flexibility. However, your word choice is consistently precise, and there are no errors that impede communication or cause confusion for the reader.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 8.0
Your writing displays a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures. You use conditional structures and relative clauses effectively, such as 'if tourism is not carefully controlled' and 'people who are not physically prepared'. The grammar is highly accurate, with very few, if any, errors. Punctuation is used correctly throughout the text. To aim for a higher band, you could experiment with a wider variety of complex sentence patterns or more advanced grammatical structures, such as inversion or passive voice, to further showcase your control over English syntax.
