Student answer (Band 8.0)

In recent years, an increasing number of tourists have chosen to visit remote destinations where they must cope with challenging environmental conditions. Although such travel can provide unique experiences and educational benefits, it can also expose visitors to serious risks and contribute to environmental damage.

One significant advantage of visiting difficult destinations is that tourists can experience environments that are very different from their everyday surroundings. This is because remote areas often contain unique landscapes and wildlife that cannot be found in ordinary holiday destinations. For example, visitors to Antarctica can observe glaciers, penguins and other wildlife in their natural environment. Such experiences can broaden people's knowledge of the natural world and encourage them to develop a greater appreciation for the environment. In addition, overcoming challenging conditions can improve people's confidence and resilience.

However, there are also several disadvantages associated with this type of tourism. The most obvious concern is the risk to tourists' health and safety. Extreme temperatures, difficult terrain and limited medical facilities can make these destinations dangerous, particularly for inexperienced travellers. For instance, tourists in the Sahara Desert may suffer from dehydration or heat exhaustion if they are not adequately prepared. Another drawback is the potential environmental impact. A large number of visitors can produce waste and disturb fragile ecosystems, which may be particularly harmful in areas such as Antarctica where wildlife and natural habitats are sensitive to human activity.

In conclusion, travelling to places with difficult conditions can provide tourists with memorable experiences, greater knowledge and personal development. Nevertheless, such tourism also involves considerable safety risks and may damage fragile environments. Therefore, I believe that these destinations should be visited responsibly and under appropriate safety regulations.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0

The response fully addresses all parts of the prompt. You have clearly identified both the benefits (unique experiences, educational value, personal development) and the disadvantages (health risks, environmental impact). The position is consistent throughout, and the ideas are well-developed with relevant examples, such as the mention of Antarctica and the Sahara. The structure is logical, and the conclusion effectively synthesizes the main points. To reach a band 9, you could further extend the depth of your analysis by briefly touching upon the socio-economic implications or the role of tourism management in these regions, but the current development is strong and meets the requirements for a high band.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0

The essay is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph has a central theme, and the transition between the benefits and disadvantages is smooth, using appropriate cohesive devices such as 'However' and 'In addition'. The use of referencing is accurate, and the paragraphing is appropriate for an essay of this length. The flow of information is natural, and the reader is guided through your argument without any confusion. The cohesion is managed effectively, making the text easy to follow throughout.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.5

You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary that is appropriate for the topic. Phrases like 'fragile ecosystems', 'natural habitats', and 'personal development' show a level of precision. The vocabulary is used naturally and accurately. While the range is sufficient and effective, incorporating a few more sophisticated or idiomatic collocations related to environmental conservation or adventure tourism could elevate the score further. Nevertheless, the lexical control is consistent, and there are no errors that impede communication.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 8.0

The essay displays a wide range of grammatical structures, including complex sentences with subordinate clauses (e.g., 'Although such travel can provide...'). The majority of your sentences are error-free, and your control over punctuation and tense usage is excellent. You use a variety of sentence forms effectively to maintain interest and clarity. There are no significant grammatical errors, and the writing is highly accurate. The level of control is very high, reflecting a strong command of English grammar.
