Student answer (Band 6.0)

Nowadays, majority of people are keen to travel to different places throughout the world for vacation and that too to places which are life threatening. in this essay, we will discuss the advantages and disadvantages for people visiting places which could be hazardous.

On the one hand, travelling to places which are not safe to live in can help tourists to understand the live in a better way. People often criticize the amenities and luxury they have and always demand more. Travelling to places with where life is hard and basic necessities are not available might help them see life in a different way and to be thankful and grateful for things they have. Moreover, they might understand the fact that less is more, and may complain less.

On the other hand, the places where travelling is not safe might end up losing their precious lives. Although all necessary precautions are taken before visiting endangered places but nobody can win against nature. For instance, a dam situated in India the engineers always labelled that area as a high alter area and informed people not to be close to that place, but three friends due to some crazy game ended up going to that zone and died to to electric shock.

To conclude, people do end up learning the importance of lives by visiting those restricted areas and are safe by luck. But more awareness should be spread amongst people to follow all the rules and regulations that are set up by higher authorities to live a meaningful and safe life.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses both the benefits and disadvantages of visiting hazardous locations. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. The benefit of 'understanding life in a better way' is a good point, but it is not fully explored with specific examples. The disadvantage section relies on a single, slightly confusing anecdote about a dam in India, which does not directly relate to the prompt's focus on extreme tourism (like the Sahara or Antarctica). While the position is clear, the arguments could be more thoroughly extended to reach a higher band. The essay meets the requirements of the prompt but lacks depth in its supporting evidence.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is organized into clear paragraphs, each with a distinct focus. Cohesive devices such as 'On the one hand', 'On the other hand', and 'Moreover' are used to signal the transition between ideas. However, the progression of ideas within paragraphs is sometimes mechanical. For instance, the transition between the general discussion of extreme tourism and the specific example of the dam in India is abrupt. Referencing is generally clear, but the overall flow could be improved by using more varied linking phrases to connect sentences more naturally rather than relying on standard signposting.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is adequate for the task but lacks the precision and range required for higher bands. There are some awkward collocations, such as 'high alter area' (likely meaning 'high alert area') and 'endangered places' (where 'hazardous' or 'perilous' would be more appropriate). The range is sufficient to convey meaning, but the student relies on relatively simple, repetitive phrasing. To improve, the student should aim to incorporate more sophisticated vocabulary related to the topic of tourism and risk management, and ensure that word choices are contextually accurate.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors that occur throughout the text, such as 'majority of people' (needs 'the'), 'understand the live' (should be 'life'), and 'died to to' (a typo). Punctuation is also inconsistent, with some missing capital letters at the start of sentences. While these errors do not significantly impede communication, they are frequent enough to prevent the essay from reaching a higher band. A greater focus on proofreading for subject-verb agreement and article usage would be beneficial.
