Student answer (Band 8.0)

In recent years, an increasing number of tourists have started visiting remote and challenging destinations such as the Sahara Desert and Antarctica. Although travelling to such places can provide valuable experiences and educational benefits, it can also expose tourists to considerable risks and create environmental problems.

One major benefit of visiting difficult-to-access destinations is the opportunity to experience unique environments that cannot be found in ordinary tourist locations. Travellers can observe unusual landscapes, wildlife and natural phenomena, which can broaden their knowledge and give them a deeper appreciation of the natural world. For example, tourists visiting Antarctica may have the opportunity to see penguins, glaciers and other forms of wildlife in their natural habitat. Such experiences can also encourage people to become more environmentally conscious and support conservation efforts.

Another advantage is that adventure tourism can contribute to the local economy. Tourists often pay for accommodation, transportation, guides and other services, thereby creating employment opportunities and generating income. In remote regions, where there may be few alternative sources of employment, tourism can therefore provide an important economic benefit.

However, travelling to such extreme destinations also has significant disadvantages. The most obvious concern is safety. Harsh weather, extreme temperatures, limited medical facilities and difficult transportation can put tourists at serious risk. A minor accident in a remote area may become life-threatening because emergency assistance could take a considerable amount of time to arrive. Furthermore, large numbers of visitors can damage fragile ecosystems. Pollution, waste and disturbance to wildlife may have long-term consequences, particularly in environmentally sensitive areas such as Antarctica.

In conclusion, visiting challenging destinations can offer tourists unforgettable experiences, greater environmental awareness and opportunities to support local economies. Nevertheless, the physical dangers and potential damage to fragile ecosystems mean that such tourism should be carefully regulated and undertaken responsibly.
