Nowadays, an increasing number of tourists are visiting remote places such as the Sahara desert or the Antarctic. Although travelling to extreme and remote regions can provide tourists with unforgettable experiences and economic benefits, it may cause significant environmental damage and safety risk for visitors.
One major advantage of visiting difficult places is that tourist can gain unique and unforgettable experience. Visitors can experience unusual landscapes, creatures and wildlife that they cannot see at ordinary tourist destinations. For example, visitors who are visiting to the Antarctic region can experience unique icebergs and wildlife that they might not see anywhere else in the whole world. As a result visiting those regions may provide a different travelling experience than usual. Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The response addresses all parts of the prompt by discussing both the benefits and disadvantages of visiting extreme and remote regions like the Sahara and the Antarctic. A clear position is established in the introduction and maintained throughout the essay. The ideas are relevant and supported with explanations and examples, such as mentioning extreme heat and dehydration in the Sahara, and unique icebergs and wildlife in the Antarctic. However, some ideas could be further extended, and there are minor tendencies to over-generalise. For instance, the discussion on economic benefits touches on local communities and tour guides, but remains somewhat brief. Overall, the task is well handled, fulfilling all requirements of the prompt appropriately.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The essay is arranged into a logical four-paragraph structure comprising an introduction, two body paragraphs addressing benefits and disadvantages respectively, and a conclusion. Information and ideas are logically sequenced with a clear overall progression. Cohesive devices are used to connect ideas, such as 'One major advantage', 'In addition', 'On the other hand', and 'Secondly'. However, referencing and cohesion are occasionally faulty or mechanical, as seen in the slightly repetitive transitional phrases and minor errors in cohesive links like 'As result there will be improvement'. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately, but the overarching flow could be smoother.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less common items such as 'unforgettable experiences', 'environmental damage', 'unpredictable', and 'extreme dehydration'. However, there are some noticeable inaccuracies in word choice, collocation, and word forms. Examples include 'tourist can gain' (plural needed), 'visiting to the Antarctic region' (unnecessary preposition), 'health and safety' (spelled 'heath'), 'sever disturbance' (spelled 'sever' instead of 'severe'), and 'safety risky' (noun/adjective confusion). Despite these errors, the lexical range is sufficient to convey the intended meaning without impeding communication.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The essay demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, incorporating dependent clauses and conditional structures such as 'Although travelling to extreme and remote regions can provide...' and 'Visitors can experience unusual landscapes... that they cannot see'. There are, however, several grammatical errors throughout the text. Noticeable errors include subject-verb agreement issues like 'tourist can gain', missing articles such as 'To get medical help in those aeras is difficult', and awkward phrasing like 'it cause a huge impact' and 'their is a huge safety risky'. Punctuation is generally acceptable, and while these errors are frequent, they rarely impede overall communication.
