Student answer (Band 6.0)

Exploring every part of the world has now become a trend to gain fame and to spread awareness about how humans survive in different conditions. Majority of the commentators claim that many tourists are visiting places where conditions are difficult. This essay will analyze benefits and disadvantages for tourists visiting such places.

First and foremost, there are several benefits of exploring places with tough conditions to live. Evidence of this is provided by spreading awareness about the harsh conditions a person can face and also aware future tourists about dangers they can face while travelling their. Besides another merit is it helps a person to develop their survival instincts and also to face any harsh situation easily. In other words, a person who survived sand storms of Sahara desert and freezing cold of Antartica can survive anything in the world.

On the contrary, there are enoumorous demerits of checking out the places with difficult conditions. A good illustration of this is if you lose your map or compass you have to wander aimlessly. What this means is in the Sahara dessert or the Antartica there will no mobile networks to use internet or to call someone. Similarly one more there will be no one to help in the Sahara dessert or in Antartica. In fact, the tourists may end up losing their lifes if they do not find a way out.

To recapitulate, exploring places with difficult conditions spread awareness for future tourists and develop a persons survival instinct. However, if your wander aimlessly you might lose your life.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the task by discussing both the benefits and disadvantages of visiting difficult environments such as the Sahara desert or the Antarctic. The position is clear throughout the essay, introducing the theme in the introduction and reiterating it in the conclusion. Ideas are presented and supported, such as developing survival instincts as a benefit and the risk of getting lost or losing one's life as a disadvantage. However, some ideas remain slightly repetitive or under-developed, such as the redundant mentioning of Sahara and Antarctica in close succession without adding deep elaboration. Overall, the content fully meets the requirements for Band 6.0.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The essay displays a coherent overall arrangement with a clear introduction, body paragraphs addressing separate aspects, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct ideas. However, cohesion is sometimes faulty or mechanical. For instance, the transition 'Besides another merit is it helps...' is awkward, and referencing in phrases like 'travelling their' instead of 'there' creates minor confusion. Cohesive devices are occasionally overused in repetitive structures, but logical organization and progression are generally maintained throughout the text, corresponding to a Band 6.0 level.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting less common items such as 'survival instincts', 'sand storms', and 'aimlessly'. However, there are noticeable spelling and word-choice errors throughout the text, including 'enoumorous' for 'enormous', 'demerits' in a slightly unnatural collocation for IELTS style, 'dessert' instead of 'desert', and 'lifes' instead of 'lives'. These errors do not seriously impede communication, but they restrict the lexical score to Band 5.5, as accuracy with less common lexis falls short of the Band 6 descriptor.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The response demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, such as 'A good illustration of this is if you lose your map or compass you have to wander aimlessly.' There are several grammatical errors and punctuation lapses, such as missing articles ('a person who survived sand storms', 'develop a persons survival instinct'), preposition errors ('travelling their'), and subject-verb agreement issues ('there will no mobile networks'). Although these errors occur regularly, the sentence structures remain comprehensible and rarely impede overall communication, placing the writing comfortably at Band 5.5.
