IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Today more and more tourists are visiting places where conditions are difficult, such as the Sahara desert or the Antarctic.

What are the benefits and disadvantages for tourists who visit such places?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

 

Student answer (Band 8.0)

In recent years, an increasing number of tourists have chosen to visit remote destinations with challenging conditions, such as the Sahara Desert and Antarctica. Although such trips can be rewarding and educational, they also involve considerable risks and disadvantages.

One major benefit of visiting these places is the opportunity to experience unique natural environments. Tourists can see landscapes and wildlife that cannot be found in ordinary holiday destinations. For example, visitors to Antarctica may observe penguins, seals and vast ice formations in their natural surroundings. Such experiences can also increase people's awareness of environmental issues and encourage them to protect fragile ecosystems. Furthermore, adventure tourism can provide a sense of achievement and personal growth, as travellers have to cope with unfamiliar and demanding conditions.

However, travelling to extreme environments can be dangerous. Very high or low temperatures, limited medical facilities and difficult terrain can put tourists' health and safety at risk. In addition, these journeys are often expensive because specialised transport, equipment and experienced guides are required. Another concern is the environmental impact of tourism. Large numbers of visitors can disturb wildlife, damage fragile habitats and generate waste in areas that are difficult to clean.

In my view, visiting such destinations can be highly valuable if tourism is carefully managed. Tourists should follow environmental regulations and travel with reputable operators, while authorities should limit visitor numbers where necessary.

In conclusion, difficult-to-reach destinations offer memorable experiences, education and personal challenges, but they also involve safety, financial and environmental disadvantages. Responsible tourism is therefore essential to ensure that these unique places are protected.
