Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the task by discussing both the benefits and disadvantages of visiting extreme environments like the Sahara desert and Antarctica. The position is clear throughout the essay. The ideas are relevant and generally extended, such as mentioning the appeal of seeing unique wildlife like penguins and seals, as well as the risks of ancient viruses and harsh conditions. However, some of the supporting points, such as the potential pandemic caused by melted ice, lean slightly toward extreme conjecture rather than fully developed realistic analysis. This prevents the task achievement from reaching higher bands, placing it firmly at Band 6.0, where all parts are addressed with relevant ideas, though some arguments remain somewhat underdeveloped or speculative.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The essay has a coherent overall arrangement and follows a logical structure, moving from an introduction to body paragraphs discussing benefits and disadvantages, and concluding with a summary. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct ideas. However, cohesion is at times faulty and mechanical. For example, the transitional phrases 'To begin' and 'To sum up' are slightly unnatural, and there are repetitive referencing patterns, such as 'such places' and 'such a place' appearing frequently in close proximity. Furthermore, logical flow between sentences is occasionally hindered by awkward phrasing. These features align well with the Band 6 descriptor, where the text is coherent overall but displays mechanical or faulty cohesion.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting some less common lexical items such as 'exploration', 'captivating', 'inhabitat', and 'pendamic'. However, there are notable word choice and spelling errors throughout the text, including 'environment condition' instead of 'environmental conditions', 'inhabitat' instead of 'uninhabited', 'naked eyes' instead of 'own eyes', 'drabacks' instead of 'drawbacks', and 'pendamic' instead of 'pandemic'. While communication is not severely impeded, these frequent inaccuracies prevent the vocabulary score from rising into the higher bands. The lexical resource demonstrated reflects a typical Band 6 performance, where an adequate vocabulary is attempted with some noticeable errors.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The writer demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing structures like relative clauses ('species which can not found anywhere else') and conditional-like or causal frameworks. However, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with articles, subject-verb agreement, and prepositions. Examples include 'visit to a new places', 'where environment condition is harsh', 'visit to the Sahara desert', 'places like Antarctica is covered', and 'take an actions'. Additionally, the passive voice construction 'can not found' lacks the auxiliary 'be'. Despite these errors, the meaning remains mostly clear and communication is rarely impeded. This mix of structures and persistent errors is characteristic of a Band 6 grammar profile.
