Student answer (Band 6.0)

Nowadays, people are more willing to visit places where they can enjoy a different experience of nature in difficult situations, like the Antarctic and the Sahara Desert. Visiting such places can help to enhance knowledge but it is also tough tu survive there without precautions which I will elaborate in the upcoming paragraphs.

Starting with the pros of visiting places with such tough conditions is a chance of developing a better knowledge related to nature as there is a chance to se such wildlife which are almost at the brink of extinction. Moreover, the Sahara Desert is the main source of fossil fuels and Antarctica is full of fresh water both of them become the main source for living beings owing to this it is now becoming a major tourist attraction as people are taking intrust to have a look on a different environment.

On the other hand, it comes with some major issues like it is tough to survive there because the Sahara Desert is very hot to live in without proper food supplies and proper navigation, as it is one of the largest deserts in the world; following this, the Antarctic is the coldest place to visit and it is almost impossible to survive there if a persone is not wearing proper layers of clothes.

To conclude, It seems very interesting on social media while looking at such places and people try to visit and have a very wonderful experience, but it do not always go well as some people have even been found dead there. To suggest that people should avoid going there without a proper preperation to survive there.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

The response addresses all parts of the prompt by discussing both the benefits and disadvantages of visiting extreme environments like the Antarctic and the Sahara Desert. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited and uneven, reflecting a partial focus. For instance, while the benefits touch upon enhancing nature knowledge and observing wildlife, the reasoning regarding fossil fuels and fresh water is slightly unclear and under-developed. Similarly, the disadvantages mention survival challenges such as temperature and lack of food, but these points lack deeper extension and specific examples from personal knowledge or experience, remaining somewhat generalised. To move to a higher band, the writer needs to fully extend and support each main idea with clearer explanations and more relevant, concrete examples.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response demonstrates a coherent overall arrangement with a clear attempt to structure the essay into an introduction, body paragraphs for pros and cons, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used sufficiently to separate the distinct ideas. However, cohesion at times feels mechanical or repetitive, particularly with transitions like 'Starting with the pros' and 'On the other hand'. Referencing is occasionally unclear, as seen in the long, rambling sentence structure in the second paragraph where pronouns and connectors blur the logical flow. To achieve a higher band, the writer must ensure that cohesive devices are used more flexibly and subtly, and that logical progression between sentences is maintained without heavy-handed linking phrases.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary suitable for tackling the general topic, attempting less common terms such as 'extinction', 'attraction', and 'environment'. However, there are noticeable lexical errors, spelling mistakes, and awkward word choices throughout the text, such as 'tu' instead of 'to', 'se' instead of 'see', and 'intrust' instead of 'interest'. Additionally, expressions like 'tough tu survive' and 'proper preperation' reveal issues with word form, spelling, and collocation. These inaccuracies occasionally cause slight strain for the reader. To reach a higher band, the writer should expand their lexical control, ensure accurate spelling, and use less common vocabulary with greater precision regarding style and collocation.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The response exhibits a mix of simple and some complex sentence forms, demonstrating an attempt at varied structures. However, control over grammar and punctuation is inconsistent. There are frequent errors in basic grammatical patterns, articles, and prepositions, such as 'related to nature', 'a persone', and 'it do not always go well'. Furthermore, attempts at complex sentences often result in run-on structures with punctuation slips, such as comma splices in the conclusion. While communication is generally maintained, these frequent errors cause occasional difficulty for the reader. To improve, the writer needs to increase the proportion of error-free sentences and exercise tighter control over subject-verb agreement and complex clause structures.
