IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Today more and more tourists are visiting places where conditions are difficult, such as the Sahara desert or the Antarctic.
What are the benefits and disadvantages for tourists who visit such places?
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
Take the trial that promisis the view.Well in recent years a lot of tourists have been traveling to places where it is almost difficult to survive.People do this to chase their dreams being a Hodophile, set world records and get famous and having a life threatening exposure is a huge risk for them.
Benefits of travelling to such places include exploring the world, different cultures;being able to survive with almost no facilities available. They are able to survive under any weather, they eat having almost no resources, they get to know the nature very well, they are able to know how to catch an animal, cook them, clear the clutter as well.
Moreover, they get all the hype from their country as they are setting a record and can represent their country worldwide.Travelling make you more confident and strong amoung other individuals.
On the other hand, there are alot of disadvantages as you risk your life just to chase your dreams or set a Guiness record. You leave your family in vulnerable conditions maybe you are the only support they have. When tourists travel to such places they have no medical aid available in case of any emergency.Their body lacks certain nutrients that are essential for daily life,i.e.protein etc. which makes them malnurished and dehydrated.
Furthermore, tourists have to constantly worry about basic needs like health, food and safety. They ran short of stuff and just live under a hope that they will survive and get something to eat naturally.
Places like this are sure worth visiting but you really need a lot of determination and a proper group which includes a medical person, someone who knows how to catch different predators and most importantly you should have all the basic needs available and mind map stuff before starting the journey.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The response addresses both benefits and disadvantages and maintains a relevant focus on tourists in challenging environments. Benefits include learning about nature, developing confidence, and gaining recognition, while risks include danger, lack of medical care, and inadequate food. These points are relevant, but some are asserted rather than explained: for example, “Travelling make you more confident” is not supported with a reason or example. The discussion of survival skills also becomes broad and unclear, particularly the claim that visitors learn to “catch an animal” and “clear the clutter.” The final advice about preparation is useful, but the response would be stronger if it developed fewer points with specific examples and made the benefits and drawbacks more precise.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, a discussion of benefits, a contrasting section on disadvantages, and a concluding recommendation. Linking phrases such as “Moreover,” “On the other hand,” and “Furthermore” help signal the direction of the argument. However, some connections feel mechanical, and ideas within paragraphs are sometimes listed rather than developed in a logical sequence. For instance, the benefits paragraph moves quickly from cultural exploration to weather, food, animal-catching, and cleaning. The reference in “they leave your family” also shifts from tourists in general to direct address, making the viewpoint less consistent. Group related ideas more carefully and use explanation or examples to show how each point follows from the previous one.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The response attempts some topic-related vocabulary, including “medical aid,” “malnourished,” “dehydrated,” and “life-threatening,” and these choices help communicate the risks. However, the range is limited and several word choices or collocations are inaccurate or unclear, which can make the reader pause. “Take the trial that promisis the view” is difficult to interpret, while “get all the hype” is informal for this essay and “mind map stuff” is imprecise. There are also spelling errors, including “promisis,” “amoung,” and “Guiness.” Aim for more precise phrases suited to the topic, such as describing “extreme environments,” “public recognition,” or “essential supplies,” and check spelling carefully.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
There is some variety in sentence forms, including complex clauses such as “When tourists travel to such places they have no medical aid available in case of any emergency.” The main ideas are generally understandable, but grammatical errors occur across the response. Examples include the subject–verb agreement error “Travelling make you,” the incorrect form “They ran short” in a general discussion, and the awkward construction “they eat having almost no resources.” Sentence boundaries and punctuation also need attention: several long lists are joined with commas, and spaces after commas and full stops are often missing. Work on consistent present-tense forms, agreement, and clearer sentence division; these changes would make the argument easier to follow.
