Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
The response addresses both sides of the question and gives relevant benefits—unusual experiences, learning, and lasting memories—and disadvantages such as illness and difficulty travelling in harsh conditions. The Antarctic example helps make the risks more concrete. However, the ideas are mostly asserted rather than explained: for instance, the claim that travel boosts awareness of current affairs is not clearly connected to visiting remote environments, and the transport point is vague. The conclusion summarises the two sides but does not add a clear overall judgement. To develop the response further, explain how each benefit or risk arises and support it with a specific, plausible example.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The essay has a recognisable structure, with an introduction, a paragraph for benefits, one for disadvantages, and a conclusion. Sequencing is generally easy to follow, and signposts such as “Firstly,” “Secondly,” and “To conclude” help readers identify the stages of the argument. However, some linking is mechanical or imprecise: “On the other” is incomplete, while “Consequently” does not clearly follow from the preceding points. The opening also promises a discussion without establishing a clear direction, and the final paragraph repeats earlier points rather than drawing them together. Use transitions that show the exact relationship between ideas, and connect each example more explicitly to its main point.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The response uses enough topic-related vocabulary to communicate its main ideas, including “health issues,” “harsh” weather, “awareness,” and “personal development.” There are also attempts at less common phrasing, such as “once in a life experience,” but several choices are inaccurate or unnatural and sometimes make the meaning less clear. Examples include “particular state of affairs are severe,” “immigrants” for visitors, and “safe precaution.” Spelling errors such as “disscuss” and “Antartica” also reduce accuracy. Aim for precise, natural collocations and check word forms and spelling; for example, describe “remote destinations with extreme conditions” rather than using an abstract phrase such as “state of affairs.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The essay attempts both simple and more complex sentences, including a conditional example beginning “if people are traveling to Antartica” and a contrast structure with “not only…but also.” However, control is inconsistent, and errors occur in basic agreement, articles, verb forms, and sentence boundaries. For example, “number of individuals are traveling” needs an article, “the particular state of affairs are” has a subject–verb agreement problem, and “People will get…the experience…, They have stories” incorrectly joins sentences with a comma. Capitalisation is also inconsistent. Practise checking each sentence for a clear subject and verb, and use shorter, accurately punctuated sentences before adding more complex structures.
