Dear Sir or Madam,
Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear sir,
I am a residence of this neighborhood and I am writing this letter to submit my opinion regarding your generous offer to sponsor our children's football team or live concerts. I believe allocating money to our sports will be a better option instead of live concerts.
As a responsible residence of this area, I think our children their needs are our top most priority. Sponsoring the football team for two years will bring glory to the society as the funds will be used to improve the infrastructure and hire qualified coaches. I am insisting you to spend money for the sports because it will help our children to perform better in upcoming local football tournament. However it does not mean that our artists are not dear to us but they already have other company helping to enhance their talent.
Thank you for being generous enough to ask for the opinion of general public.
Your sincerely,
Steven

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The letter addresses all three bullet points required by the prompt. You clearly state your preference for the sports team and provide reasons for both options. However, the development of the second bullet point regarding the concerts is quite brief. While you mention that artists have other support, expanding slightly on the potential benefits of the concerts (e.g., community spirit or cultural enrichment) would have provided a more balanced argument. Your position is consistent throughout the letter, and the tone is appropriate for a formal request to a company. To reach a higher band, ensure each bullet point is developed with equal depth.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The letter is logically organized, with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a closing. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'However' and 'instead of' to link ideas. However, the transition between the benefits of the sports team and the mention of the concerts is slightly abrupt. The paragraphing is sufficient, but the flow could be improved by using a wider variety of linking words or phrases to connect your sentences more fluidly. The referencing is generally clear, though the structure of the second paragraph is a bit repetitive in its focus on the children.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'allocating', 'infrastructure', and 'generous'. There are some minor errors in word choice, such as 'residence' instead of 'resident' and 'top most' instead of 'topmost'. These errors do not impede communication, but they do highlight a need for more precise control over word forms. To improve, focus on using more sophisticated collocations and ensuring that nouns and adjectives are used correctly in context. The vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'I am insisting you to spend' (should be 'I urge you to spend') and 'our children their needs' (a redundant pronoun). Additionally, 'Your sincerely' is an incorrect closing phrase; it should be 'Yours sincerely'. While these errors are noticeable, they do not prevent the reader from understanding your message. To achieve a higher score, focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of prepositions and verb patterns.
