Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I am James, who is a long standing member of Malton community group since 2024. In recent team meeting, we encounter your proposal and appreciate your efforts for funding.
The idea to sponsor kids' sport team for two consequent years boost their confidence. Moreover, due to financial struggle, many children unable to join such a leisure activity. Although having sufficient talent, young people suffer because of proper training.
On the contrary, by arranging couple of concerts in the open ground allows vast amount of residents to attend as well as enjoy with family and friends. Consequently, individuals relax and spends quality time, which enhance their efficiency and productivity.
My personal view point is to arrange just one concert with famous public figure can cover the initial motive. Furthermore, with the remaining fund, children can be provided with the essential sports kit to start developing their respective careers.
I look forward to hearing from you in the near future.
Yours faithfully,
James Norton

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
You have addressed all three bullet points of the task effectively. You described the benefits of the sports team sponsorship, summarized the benefits of the concerts, and provided a clear, balanced recommendation. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter. To improve, you could expand slightly on the specific 'benefits' for the sports team, such as mentioning physical health or team-building skills, rather than focusing primarily on financial constraints. Your position is clear throughout, and the letter follows the expected structure for a General Training Task 1 response.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The letter is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each serving a specific purpose. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Moreover', 'On the contrary', and 'Consequently' to link your ideas. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical or forced. For instance, the transition 'On the contrary' is not the most natural choice to introduce the second option, as the two ideas are not necessarily contradictory. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring they flow more naturally between sentences would help elevate your score in this criterion.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'long standing member', 'proposal', and 'respective careers'. There are some minor word choice errors, such as 'consequent years' (should be 'consecutive') and 'couple of concerts' (which sounds slightly informal). Additionally, 'proper training' is a bit vague in context. You have enough vocabulary to convey your meaning clearly, but to reach a higher band, you should aim for more precise collocations and a slightly more sophisticated range of academic or formal vocabulary.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. However, there are several grammatical slips that occur throughout the text. Examples include 'I am James, who is a long standing member' (awkward phrasing), 'many children unable to join' (missing verb 'are'), and 'by arranging couple of concerts... allows' (subject-verb agreement error). While these errors do not impede communication, they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and ensuring all clauses have a main verb will significantly improve your accuracy.
