Dear Sir or Madam,

Student answer (Band 8.0)

Dear Sir,

I am writing to respond to the feedback that your company is requesting regarding how your organization should invest the funding in the community.

There are several benefits if your company provides financial support to a domestic children's sports group event such as attracting young people and encouraging them to stay active and healthy. Later, it will assist them in growing their interest in sports and build analytical and cognitive skills which help them in their future career. Moreover, such approach contributes to purchasing better equipments and hiring professional trainers to coach the team.

On the other hand, sponsoring the two open-air concerts can encourage locals to participate in entertainment and bring the community together which is essential for their overall well- being. Additionally, it will attract visitors from outside the town which will further aid in the growth and demand of local businesses. Thus, this will boost the local economy.

Although I find both approaches worthwhile, I personally believe that spending money on a local children's sports team is a valuable investment. This will positively impact the young generation by supporting their physical, mental and social well-being.

I appreciate the given opportunity to share my opinion, and I hope you will take all the suggestions into consideration

Yours faithfully,

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.5

The response successfully addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You clearly described the benefits of the sports team sponsorship, summarised the advantages of the concerts, and provided a firm, well-reasoned recommendation. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter, and the purpose is clear from the outset. The ideas are relevant and sufficiently developed to meet the requirements of the task. To reach a higher band, you could provide slightly more specific detail or 'real-world' examples to make your arguments even more persuasive, but overall, the task is fully accomplished.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.5

The letter is logically organised with a clear introduction, body paragraphs for each option, and a concluding recommendation. The use of cohesive devices such as 'Moreover', 'On the other hand', and 'Additionally' helps to guide the reader through your arguments effectively. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct ideas. The progression of information is smooth, and the letter maintains a consistent focus throughout. The structure is sound and supports the overall message well.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.5

You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary appropriate for a formal letter, such as 'financial support', 'well-being', and 'worthwhile'. There is an attempt to use more sophisticated collocations, though some minor inaccuracies occur, such as 'domestic children's sports group event' which is slightly wordy. The vocabulary is generally precise and conveys your meaning clearly. To improve, focus on using more natural collocations and avoiding slightly awkward phrasing to achieve a more fluent, academic tone.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 8.0

The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures effectively. Most sentences are error-free, and your control over punctuation is generally good. There are occasional minor slips, such as 'such approach' (should be 'such an approach') and 'equipments' (which is an uncountable noun). However, these errors are infrequent and do not impede communication. Your ability to construct complex sentences to explain cause and effect is a strength that contributes to the overall clarity of your writing.
