Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing in response to your request for public feedback regarding how your company should allocate the funding for the local community.

In my view, sponsoring a local children's sports for two years would provide a long term benefit. Firstly, it help children's to gain some practical skills and improve their health condition. In addition, It will be beneficial for the low-income families helped them in purchasing equipments, uniforms and provide trainings.

On the other hand funding two open air-concerts would provide an excellent opportunity for residents of different ages to come together and enjoy events. Such events provides a lively atmosphere and generate business for local community.Concerts would also provide a cultural connection between the residents and help them to meet a wider section of population.

Nevertheless, I strongly believe that the company should sponsor the children's sports team. It will have a positive impact on children's health, personal development and sense of community.

Thank you for considering my views.

Yours faithfully,

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response addresses all three bullet points of the prompt effectively. You clearly describe the benefits of the sports team, summarize the advantages of the concerts, and provide a firm recommendation for the sports sponsorship. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter, and the purpose is clear from the outset. To reach a higher band, ensure that your supporting points are fully developed; for instance, while you mention 'practical skills' for the sports team, elaborating on how this impacts the children's future or confidence would add more depth to your argument. Overall, the task is well-handled with a consistent position maintained throughout.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is logically organized into distinct paragraphs, each serving a specific purpose. You use transition signals such as 'In my view,' 'Firstly,' 'In addition,' 'On the other hand,' and 'Nevertheless' to guide the reader through your argument. These cohesive devices are generally used effectively. However, there are minor issues with punctuation and sentence structure that slightly disrupt the flow, such as the missing comma after 'In addition' and the run-on sentence in the second paragraph. Improving the variety of linking phrases and ensuring precise punctuation would enhance the overall coherence of your writing.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'allocate,' 'long term benefit,' and 'lively atmosphere.' There are some minor errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'children's sports' (should be 'children's sports team') and 'helped them in purchasing equipments' (equipment is an uncountable noun). Additionally, 'provide trainings' is slightly unnatural; 'provide training' or 'offer coaching' would be more precise. While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, incorporating a few more sophisticated collocations or topic-specific phrases would help elevate your score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is appropriate for this task. However, there are several grammatical errors that occur throughout the text. For example, 'it help children's to gain' should be 'it helps children to gain,' and 'Such events provides' should be 'Such events provide' (subject-verb agreement). There are also minor punctuation errors, such as the missing space after the period in 'local community.Concerts.' While these errors do not impede communication, they are frequent enough to prevent a higher band score. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and pluralization will significantly improve your accuracy.
