Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Bob,

I hope you are doing well!

Firstly, it's pleasure for the people of Toronto as "PWC" will be sponsoring the sports team or air concerts. Secondly, thank you for giving us the opportunity to vote for an activity to be sponsored.

While some individuals are in support of sport's team funding, others argue by supporting concert funding.

The causes behind sponsoring sports are as below. To begin with, it will boost the sports sector of country and amplify the popularity of sports among worldwide. For instance, the spectrum of teams from world are unable to play sports worldwide due to lack of funding though they have exceptional talent such as Indian football team. Moreover, it will create employment opportunities while organizing sports event for that teams like restaurants, and for the talented players. Sports funding will be done for larger periods as compared 2 concerts. Thus, above are benefits of sports funding.

The merits of concerts are as follows, it will become the new sport of entertainment for public. Further, it will also provide opportunities for musicians and singers. However, it will be funded for just 2 concerts. Due to the above major cause, I will support the sports team funding.

Your sincerely,

Devam Modi

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

You have addressed all three bullet points of the task: describing the benefits of the sports team, summarizing the concert benefits, and stating your preference. However, the development of these ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, your argument regarding the sports team mentions 'employment opportunities' and 'popularity,' but these points are not fully explored or linked clearly to the local context requested. Additionally, the tone is slightly inconsistent; you begin with 'Dear Bob,' which is informal, whereas the task implies a formal business communication. To improve, ensure your supporting points are more specific and maintain a consistent, professional tone throughout the letter.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The letter is organized into clear paragraphs, which helps the reader follow your argument. You use some cohesive devices, such as 'To begin with,' 'Moreover,' and 'However,' to link your ideas. However, some transitions are mechanical or slightly unnatural, such as 'The causes behind sponsoring sports are as below.' Furthermore, the referencing is occasionally unclear; for example, 'that teams' in the second paragraph lacks a clear antecedent. To reach a higher band, focus on using a wider variety of linking words and ensure that your pronouns and references clearly point back to the ideas you have previously mentioned.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'exceptional talent,' 'employment opportunities,' and 'merits.' However, there are several instances of awkward word choice and collocation errors, such as 'air concerts' (instead of 'open-air concerts') and 'new sport of entertainment.' Additionally, there are minor errors in word formation, such as 'sport's team' (should be 'sports team'). While these errors do not impede communication, they limit your score. To improve, focus on learning common collocations and ensuring that your word choices are contextually appropriate for a formal letter.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

You attempt a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there is a high frequency of grammatical errors. Examples include 'it's pleasure for the people' (missing article 'a'), 'spectrum of teams from world' (missing article 'the'), and 'compared 2 concerts' (missing 'to'). There are also issues with subject-verb agreement and preposition usage. While your meaning is generally clear, these persistent errors in basic grammar and punctuation prevent the writing from reaching a higher band. Focus on proofreading your work to correct basic errors in articles, prepositions, and sentence construction.
