Dear Sir or Madam,
Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Sir,
Thank you for the giving me this opportunity. I am writing to express my views on how your company should spend the money that has been allocated either to sponsor a local children's sports team for two years or to organise two open-air concerts.
Sponsoring the sports team would provide several long-term benefits to the local community. It would encourage our children to participate in physical activities and develop teamwork , discipline and maintain a healthy lifestyle.
On the other hand, organizing concerts would provide entertainment for wider section of the community, This will also benefit local businesses such as restaurants, shops and vendors. Conducting events will be not much effective for the longer period of time. This will only give a shorter period of happiness and wealth.
In my opinion , I strongly recommend that the company sponsor the children's sports team. As it would not only promote healthy habits but also encourage teamwork and give youth opportunities to excel in new areas.
I hope the company makes a decision that provides long term benefits to local community.
Yours faithfully,
Jass Purba

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The response successfully addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You clearly describe the benefits of the sports team, summarize the benefits of the concerts, and provide a clear recommendation. The ideas are relevant and logically developed. To reach a higher band, you could expand slightly more on the specific 'long-term' nature of the sports sponsorship compared to the 'short-term' nature of the concerts to provide a more nuanced argument. However, the position is consistent throughout the letter, and the tone is appropriate for a formal request to a company.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs for each option, and a concluding recommendation. You use cohesive devices such as 'On the other hand' and 'In my opinion' to guide the reader. However, there are minor issues with punctuation and flow, such as the comma splice in 'wider section of the community, This will also benefit'. Improving the use of linking words and ensuring punctuation does not disrupt the flow would enhance the coherence of the text.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'allocated', 'participate', and 'excel'. There are some minor inaccuracies in collocation, such as 'not much effective', which should be 'not very effective'. While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, it lacks the variety and precision of less common lexical items that would be required for a higher band score. Focusing on more sophisticated collocations and avoiding repetitive phrasing will help improve this score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is appropriate for this task. Most of your sentences are clear and easy to follow. There are some minor grammatical errors, such as 'Thank you for the giving me' (the 'the' is unnecessary) and 'longer period of time' (which is slightly unnatural). Punctuation is generally functional, though there are occasional errors with comma placement. The errors present do not impede communication, but more consistent control over complex structures is needed for a higher band.
