Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Mam/Sir,

I am writing to share my opinion about how your company should invest the money allocated for supporting the local community.

On the one hand, sponsoring a local sports team has several benefits. First of all, it would encourage the children to participate more in physical activities as well as develop a healthy lifestyle. In addition, playing in a team helps them to build strong communication skills, self-confidence, punctuality and sportsmanship. As a result, they will become good citizen of the country and learn about a sense of responsibility.

On the other hand, investing money in two open-air concerts helps the local individuals to enjoy with their families and friends and acts as a source of entertainment. Moreover, it will attract visitors to the area and directly contribute to the local restaurants and businesses.

I believe you should invest money in both sectors by equally dividing them.

Thanks for your consideration towards such an act.

yours faithfully,

Sandeep Kaur

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

The response addresses all parts of the prompt effectively. You clearly describe the benefits of the sports team sponsorship, such as physical health and social skills, and the benefits of the concerts, such as community enjoyment and economic impact. Your position is clearly stated in the final paragraph, where you suggest a balanced approach. The ideas are relevant and well-developed, providing a logical flow that meets the requirements of a formal letter. To reach a higher band, you could provide slightly more specific detail or a more nuanced justification for why a split investment is the most effective strategy for the company.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0

The letter is well-organized with a clear structure. You use appropriate paragraphing to separate the different points required by the task. Cohesive devices such as 'On the one hand', 'In addition', 'As a result', and 'Moreover' are used effectively to guide the reader through your arguments. The progression of ideas is logical, moving from the benefits of the sports team to the benefits of the concerts, and finally to your recommendation. The letter follows a standard formal format, which is appropriate for the task.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your ideas clearly. Phrases like 'invest the money allocated', 'physical activities', and 'contribute to the local restaurants' are used accurately. There are some minor issues with word choice, such as 'enjoy with their families' (which should be 'enjoy themselves with their families') and 'good citizen of the country' (which should be plural 'citizens'). While the vocabulary is functional and appropriate for the context, incorporating a few more sophisticated collocations or less common lexical items would help elevate the score further.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The letter contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. Most of your sentences are clear and error-free, which allows for easy communication. However, there are a few grammatical slips, such as 'Dear Mam/Sir' (which should be 'Dear Sir or Madam' as requested in the prompt) and the missing article in 'invest money in both sectors' (should be 'the money'). Additionally, 'good citizen of the country' requires pluralization. Despite these minor errors, your control over grammar is generally good, and the errors do not impede the reader's understanding of your message.
