Dear Sir or Madam,

Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing this letter on behalf of our community to provide feedback regarding two options: either to sponsor a local children's sports team for two years, or to pay for two open-air concerts.

On the one hand, sponsoring the sports team has many pros, one of them is convenience. If the community will be sponsored by you, it will create substantial impact on the youth. They will be more interested in the sporting activities. As a result, it will improve their strength and stamina.

On the other hand, paying for the concerts will help the community to unwind from their day to day activities. Not only that, it will also help them to be social and give them opportunity to meet people of their own community.

According to my perspective, I believe you should invest in sponsoring children’s sport team, that would be the long term benefit as compared to arranging two live concerts, which can give happiness to the community for a limited time.

Thank you for your time and consideration. I will look forward to hearing from you.

Yours faithfully,

Deep Patel

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

You have addressed all three bullet points of the task effectively. You described the benefits of the sports team, summarized the benefits of the concerts, and provided a clear recommendation. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter. To reach a higher band, ensure that your ideas are slightly more developed. For example, when discussing the sports team, you could elaborate on how the sponsorship specifically helps (e.g., providing equipment or coaching), rather than just mentioning 'strength and stamina'. Overall, the response is well-focused and fulfills the requirements of the prompt.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is logically organized with clear paragraphing. You use standard cohesive devices such as 'On the one hand', 'On the other hand', and 'As a result' to guide the reader through your argument. The progression of ideas is easy to follow. To improve, try to vary your linking words slightly more, as some of the transitions are quite formulaic. Additionally, ensure that referencing is precise; for instance, in the second paragraph, 'one of them is convenience' is a bit vague—it would be better to specify what you mean by convenience in this context.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You have a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your ideas clearly. You use some good collocations like 'substantial impact' and 'day to day activities'. However, there are some minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'According to my perspective', which is not a standard collocation (better: 'From my perspective' or 'In my opinion'). You also rely on some simpler vocabulary like 'pros' and 'happiness'. Incorporating more precise, academic synonyms would elevate your score. Overall, your vocabulary is adequate for the task and does not impede communication.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are some grammatical errors, such as 'If the community will be sponsored by you' (should be 'If the team is sponsored by you') and 'I will look forward to hearing from you' (should be 'I look forward to hearing from you'). While these errors are noticeable, they do not impede the reader's understanding. To improve, focus on conditional structures and verb tense consistency. You have good control over basic punctuation and sentence construction, which provides a solid foundation for higher-level writing.
