Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sir,

I hope you are doing well. My name is Niyati Chauhan living in Thompson. I heard about the news that your company is planning to invest some money in sports team or for open air concerts. Today, I am writing a letter to share my feedback on behalf of our society.

Firstly, there are many advantages by investing money in local children’s sports team like they gets opportunity to take participation at international level of badminton. In addition it also helpful for them to show their talent in all over the world.

Secondly, paying for concerts has less advantages than investing in sport team because local people can just enjoy and get vibe of free concert music for just short time.

I think they should pay for the children’s sport team for their better future and growth. I hope you consider my feedback take beneficial action for the people. I really appreciate your response. Thank you.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The letter covers all three bullet points required by the prompt. You have described the benefits of the sports team, summarized the benefits of the concerts, and provided a clear recommendation. However, the development of these ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, the benefits of the sports team are mentioned, but the explanation remains quite brief. To reach a higher band, you should expand on your points with more specific examples or reasoning. For example, instead of just saying 'show their talent', you could explain how this fosters community spirit or provides healthy habits for the youth. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is organized into logical paragraphs, which helps the reader follow your argument. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'In addition', and 'Secondly' to transition between ideas. However, the flow between some sentences is slightly mechanical. The referencing is generally clear, but there are instances where the connection between ideas could be smoother. For example, the transition from the introduction to the body paragraphs is functional but could be more sophisticated. Overall, the structure is clear, and the paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the different requirements of the task.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

Your vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing you to convey your message clearly. You use some relevant terms like 'invest', 'opportunity', and 'international level'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'take participation' (should be 'participate') and 'get vibe of' (which is too informal for this context). To improve, try to incorporate more precise vocabulary related to community development and sponsorship. The range of vocabulary is sufficient to communicate your points, but it lacks the flexibility and precision required for higher band scores.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

You demonstrate a mix of simple and some complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors throughout the text. For example, 'I heard about the news that your company is planning to invest some money in sports team' (missing articles: 'a sports team'), 'they gets opportunity' (subject-verb agreement error), and 'it also helpful' (missing verb 'is'). These errors occur frequently but do not impede the overall understanding of your letter. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of articles, as these are recurring issues in your writing.
