Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dera Sir or Madam,

I hope you are doing well. I am writing this letter to you to provide feedback as requested because your company is spending money on either local children's sports team or two open-air concerts.

There are lots of advantages of spending money for the sports team. Firstly, it will be very helpful for children's health because sports boost children's physical and mental wellbeing. They love to spend their time playing sports with their friends in pairs. Also, this will motivate other youngsters by watching them playing.

On the other hand, pros of sponsoring for the concerts are also very kind. People in our area have not attend any concert for many years. If this concert happen, I think it will be first in last ten years. This activity will help people socialize with others and spend their free time while having fun.

At last, I believe that your organization should spend their money on teenager's sport team as benefits of doing this is more than other. I hope that my suggestion will be helpful.

Kind regards,

Gurpreet Singh

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

You have addressed all three bullet points in the prompt, providing benefits for both options and clearly stating your preference. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter. To improve, ensure your ideas are more fully developed. For instance, when discussing the sports team, you could elaborate on how it fosters community spirit or long-term health habits rather than just mentioning physical wellbeing. Similarly, for the concerts, you could explain the cultural impact on the local area. Your position is clear, but adding a bit more depth to your arguments would elevate the response to a higher band.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs for each option, and a concluding recommendation. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'Also', and 'On the other hand' to link your ideas. However, the flow between sentences is sometimes a bit mechanical. To improve, try to use a wider variety of linking words and ensure that your referencing is precise. For example, in the final paragraph, 'benefits of doing this is more than other' is slightly awkward; a more cohesive phrasing would be 'the benefits of this option outweigh those of the concerts'.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You have an adequate range of vocabulary to convey your message clearly. You use some relevant terms like 'wellbeing', 'socialize', and 'organization'. However, there are some minor errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'pros of sponsoring for the concerts are also very kind' (where 'kind' is not the correct adjective) and 'teenager's sport team' (which should be plural or general). To reach a higher band, focus on using more precise collocations and avoiding repetitive phrasing. Expanding your vocabulary to include more sophisticated synonyms will also help.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While your meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors throughout the text, such as 'If this concert happen' (should be 'happens'), 'it will be first in last ten years' (missing articles), and 'Dera Sir' (spelling error). These errors do not impede communication, but they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. Focus on subject-verb agreement, the correct use of articles, and proofreading for minor slips to improve your accuracy.
