Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing this letter to show my gratitude to give chance to local people for their opinion and give my suggestions regarding grant that a big firm of our area wants to give either for local pupils' sports team sponsorship or out side concerts.

Firstly, there are many advantages for local children if this grant use for sports team sponsorship as they will get chance to enhance and improve their skills as well as enter in some competition that make them more motivated.

On the other hand, concerts also help to increase people to visit our area more, which will help to boost our local economy and to make our area more famous.

According to my view, firm should spend grant to sponsor local children's sports team as it will create new opportunities for them. It will not only beneficial for children but also for local people to get chance to watch different tournaments which has their own local team.

I look forward to see your response and decision on the grant.

Yours Faithfully,

Tara Patel

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The letter addresses all three bullet points of the prompt: the benefits of the sports team, the benefits of the concerts, and a clear recommendation. The position is consistent throughout. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, the benefits of the sports team are described in general terms ('enhance and improve their skills'), and the economic benefits of the concerts are mentioned but not fully explored. To reach a higher band, you should provide more specific details or examples to support your arguments, such as how the sports team fosters community spirit or how the concerts specifically attract tourism.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is organized into clear paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the structure of the response. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'On the other hand', and 'According to my view' to transition between ideas. While the logical flow is generally easy to follow, the cohesion is sometimes mechanical. The referencing is occasionally slightly awkward, such as in the phrase 'which has their own local team', where the pronoun reference is unclear. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring smoother transitions between sentences would enhance the overall coherence.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'gratitude', 'sponsorship', 'tournaments', and 'economy'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'give chance to local people' (should be 'give local people a chance') and 'grant use for' (should be 'grant is used for'). There is also some repetition of words like 'local' and 'area'. To improve, try to use more precise synonyms and focus on natural collocations to convey your ideas with greater sophistication.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors throughout the text. Examples include 'to give chance' (missing article), 'if this grant use for' (incorrect verb form/passive voice), and 'I look forward to see' (should be 'I look forward to seeing'). While these errors do not impede communication, they are noticeable and occur regularly. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement, correct preposition usage after certain verbs, and ensuring that passive constructions are formed accurately.
