IELTS Writing Task 1 question
A large company in your area has decided to spend a certain amount of money, either to sponsor a local children's sports team for two years, or to pay for two open-air concerts. It has asked for feedback from the general public.
Write a letter to the company. In your letter
- describe the benefits of sponsoring the sports team
- summarise the benefits of paying for the concerts
- say how you think the company should spend the money
You do NOT need to write any addresses.
Begin your letter as follows:
Dear Sir or Madam,
Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Sir,
I am writing this letter to you regarding my opinion for your company's decision for whether to sponsor a sports team or open-air concert.
It is a brilliant idea to sponsor the local children's sports team as it will work as a helping hand for children with talent and encourage them to perform their best because they can obtain the exact assistance needed to get the best out of them as some children are very talented however they do not have the enough financial support. Moreover, it will act as a motivation for the youth to take part in the games and help gain the local team the courage and praise they need.
Meanwhile the open-air concerts will provide a chance to meet and see the local talent as well. These concerts can be performed by local singers or bands, which will not only help them show their hidden talent but also let them find the career they think of.
I assume that both the proposals are best in either way. The sports team should be sponsored for a year and there will be one concert so that equal opportunities can be given to everyone without overlooking the significance of any one of them.
Thank you for your consideration to this and I will look forward to hear from you.
Regards,
HK

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
You have addressed all three bullet points of the prompt. You described the benefits of the sports team and the concerts, and you provided a clear recommendation. However, your recommendation to split the funding is a slight deviation from the prompt's instruction to choose between the two options. While this is a creative approach, it weakens the focus of your argument. To improve, ensure you fully commit to one of the provided options or provide a more robust justification for why a compromise is the only viable path. The ideas are relevant, but the development could be more specific to ensure a higher band score.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The letter is logically organized with clear paragraphing. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the task. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Moreover' and 'Meanwhile' to connect ideas. However, the transition between the second and third paragraphs is a bit abrupt. Additionally, some sentences are slightly repetitive in structure. To improve, try to use a wider variety of linking words and ensure that the progression of ideas flows more naturally from one point to the next. The overall structure is clear and easy to follow.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task. Phrases like 'hidden talent' and 'financial support' are used correctly. However, there are some instances of slightly unnatural phrasing, such as 'work as a helping hand' and 'find the career they think of'. These do not impede communication, but they lack the precision expected at higher bands. To improve, focus on learning more formal collocations and idiomatic expressions suitable for a semi-formal letter. Avoid overly simplistic phrasing when more precise alternatives are available.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical slips, such as 'regarding my opinion for your company's decision for whether' (which is wordy and slightly awkward) and 'look forward to hear from you' (should be 'hearing'). There are also minor issues with article usage and preposition choice. To reach a higher band, focus on ensuring subject-verb agreement and refining your use of complex sentence structures to minimize these minor errors. Most of your sentences are understandable, but accuracy needs improvement.
