Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I hope this letter finds you well. I am writing this letter to give you my opinion on spending money in a meaningful way.

There are numerous benefits to sponsoring the sports team. Firstly, it may encourage young individuals to take part in sports and do some physical activities in their free time rather than using their phones. Secondly, with the help of sports, children can improve different kinds of skills, such as teamwork, patience and other interpersonal skills, which may assist them to become good citizens in their society.

However, the main advantages of paying for concerts are that, as nowadays people have hectic schedules due to have concerts, people can get a break from their boring routines and enjoy concerts. Therefore, they can reduce their stress.

According to my perspective, the company should spend money on sponsoring the sports team for 2 years, which is more beneficial than concerts because children can devote their leisure time in a fruitful way.

I hope you will like my advice.

Yours faithfully,

Harjinder Kaur

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

You have addressed all three bullet points of the task effectively. You provided clear benefits for both the sports team and the concerts, and you stated a clear preference for the sports sponsorship. The ideas are relevant and logically developed. To reach a higher band, you could expand slightly more on the long-term impact of the sports sponsorship, perhaps by mentioning community health or social cohesion, to provide a more comprehensive argument. Overall, the response is well-focused and meets the requirements of the task.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs for each option, and a concluding recommendation. You used transition signals such as 'Firstly', 'Secondly', 'However', and 'Therefore' to guide the reader. While the structure is sound, some of the transitions are slightly mechanical. To improve, try to vary your cohesive devices and ensure that the flow between sentences feels more natural. Paragraphing is used appropriately, which helps the reader follow your line of reasoning without difficulty.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You have used a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your ideas clearly. Phrases like 'hectic schedules', 'interpersonal skills', and 'fruitful way' are appropriate for the context. However, there are some minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'due to have concerts', which is grammatically awkward. To improve, focus on using more precise collocations and avoiding repetitive phrasing. Expanding your vocabulary to include more sophisticated synonyms for common words would help elevate your score in this criterion.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures. Most of your sentences are clear and easy to follow. There are a few minor grammatical slips, such as 'According to my perspective' (which should be 'From my perspective') and the awkward phrasing 'due to have concerts'. Despite these occasional errors, your meaning is never obscured, and your control over punctuation and sentence construction is generally solid. Increasing the variety of complex structures would further strengthen your performance.
