Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing this letter in response to the general feedback about funding for a local children's sports team or to pay for two open-air concerts.

As we know children are the future of our country. It is a very beneficial to invest a money for a local sports team. It can provide the opportunity to develop skills and interests to children. In the long run, it can ultimately aid to develop the overall country.

However, paying for concerts is also worthwhile. It can generate a good amount of money that can useful for the further development. It can provide a chance to get introduce with other people and experience live events. It can lead to a memorable experience.

I would recommended to use this money to sponsor a local children's sports team. As it has a number of benefits compare to concerts. It is very essential to spend a money on the children first.

I hope it will help you take a better decision.

Your's faithfully,

Mittu

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The letter addresses all three bullet points required by the prompt. You clearly describe the benefits of the sports team, summarize the benefits of the concerts, and state your preference. However, the development of these ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, the explanation of how the sports team aids the 'overall country' is quite vague. To reach a higher band, you should provide more specific examples or concrete reasons for your arguments. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter, and your position is consistent throughout the response.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is organized into logical paragraphs, with each paragraph focusing on a specific part of the task. There is a clear progression of ideas from the introduction to the conclusion. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'However' and 'In the long run' to link sentences. However, the flow is occasionally mechanical, and some transitions feel repetitive. To improve, try using a wider variety of linking words and ensure that referencing (e.g., 'it') is always clear and unambiguous to the reader.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, such as 'beneficial', 'worthwhile', and 'memorable'. However, there are several instances of awkward word choice and minor errors, such as 'get introduce with' instead of 'get introduced to' and 'aid to develop' instead of 'aid in the development of'. The vocabulary is generally functional but lacks the precision and flexibility required for higher bands. Focusing on collocations and more sophisticated phrasing would significantly enhance your score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with articles ('a money', 'the children') and verb forms ('I would recommended'). Some sentences are slightly disjointed due to these errors. To improve, pay closer attention to subject-verb agreement and the correct use of articles. Increasing the variety of complex structures while ensuring they are error-free will help you move toward a higher band.
