Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir/ Madam

I am writing a letter to you regarding your funds for my area. I would like to thank you for the support and give you some views regarding this decision.

It is a great idea to help our kids' sports team. It will encourage them to participate in games as well as improve their playing skills. Paying for kids' sports team will also support them to build their career in games field.

On the other hand, funding the live concerts will be a good source of entertainment for the society. People can come and enjoy their favourite artist. Alongside, there will be more openings for local people to work during the concerts as a support team, such as security and food vendors.

According to me, sponsoring the sports team for kids for next two years will be more beneficial for the area's population as it helps building future of the new generation.

Yours sincerely

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You clearly describe the benefits of the sports team sponsorship and the concerts, and you provide a clear recommendation. The ideas are relevant and logically developed. To reach a higher band, you could expand slightly more on the long-term impact of the sports sponsorship, perhaps by mentioning community health or social cohesion, to provide a more thorough development of your ideas. However, the current response fully satisfies the requirements of the task.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is well-organized with clear paragraphing. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the prompt, which makes the letter easy to follow. You use some cohesive devices, such as 'On the other hand' and 'Alongside', to link your ideas. To improve, try to incorporate a wider variety of linking words and ensure that transitions between sentences are smoother. For example, the transition between the benefits of the concerts and the employment opportunities could be more fluid. Overall, the progression of ideas is logical and easy to understand.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You use a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your ideas clearly. Phrases like 'source of entertainment' and 'beneficial for the area's population' are appropriate for the context. However, the vocabulary is somewhat basic and repetitive (e.g., 'kids' sports team' is used multiple times). To achieve a higher score, try to use more precise synonyms or collocations, such as 'youth athletic program' or 'community engagement'. There are no significant errors in word choice that impede communication, but the range is limited to common, everyday language.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the grammar is generally accurate, there are some minor errors, such as 'helps building future' (should be 'helps to build the future') and 'games field' (which is slightly unnatural). You demonstrate a good grasp of basic sentence construction, but there is a lack of more sophisticated complex structures. To improve, focus on using a wider variety of subordinate clauses and ensure consistent subject-verb agreement. The errors present do not interfere with the overall meaning of the letter.
