IELTS Writing Task 1 question
A large company in your area has decided to spend a certain amount of money, either to sponsor a local children's sports team for two years, or to pay for two open-air concerts. It has asked for feedback from the general public.
Write a letter to the company. In your letter
- describe the benefits of sponsoring the sports team
- summarise the benefits of paying for the concerts
- say how you think the company should spend the money
You do NOT need to write any addresses.
Begin your letter as follows:
Dear Sir or Madam,
Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Sir
I hope you are doing well. Your company asked for feedback on sponsoring children's sports teams and open-air concerts. I want to share my thoughts on it. I believe that if you sponsor a team, it will be best for you and for locals as well, as they could make you famous if they win any game on the national platform. You can also earn money by promoting them, as you are their backbone; their parents will be thankful for the rest of their lives.
On the other hand, paying for concerts has its own benefits; there have never been any open-air concerts, as people can relax there, and it's also their first time watching a live concert. When they buy tickets, it will be a good source of income for you.
However, I believe that sponsoring a local children's sports team for two years is the best option compared to concerts, because concerts can last just two days, whereas sponsorship lasts longer. It will help your company establish itself properly, and you can build trust with them.
Thank you
Raman

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
You have addressed all three bullet points of the prompt: describing the benefits of the sports team, summarizing the benefits of the concerts, and stating your preference. Your position is clear throughout the letter. However, the development of your ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, the argument that the sports team could make the company 'famous' on a 'national platform' is a bit unrealistic for a local children's team. To reach a higher band, try to provide more realistic and detailed justifications for your opinions, such as the long-term community impact or the specific branding benefits for the company.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The letter is organized into clear paragraphs, which helps the reader follow your argument. You use some cohesive devices such as 'On the other hand' and 'However' to transition between ideas. However, the flow within paragraphs could be improved. Some sentences feel slightly disjointed, and the use of referencing is occasionally unclear, such as in the phrase 'build trust with them,' where 'them' could refer to the children, the parents, or the community. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring clear pronoun references would strengthen the overall coherence.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You have a sufficient range of vocabulary to communicate your ideas effectively. You use some relevant terms like 'sponsoring,' 'backbone,' and 'establish itself.' However, the vocabulary is somewhat basic and repetitive. There are also minor issues with word choice, such as 'make you famous' or 'any game on the national platform,' which sound slightly unnatural in this context. To improve, try to incorporate more precise collocations and topic-specific vocabulary related to corporate social responsibility or community engagement.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While your meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors, such as 'there have never been any open-air concerts' (which is a bit vague) and 'it's also their first time watching' (which lacks a clear antecedent). Punctuation is generally functional, but some sentences are slightly run-on. To achieve a higher score, focus on reducing these minor errors and increasing the variety of complex structures, such as using more conditional sentences or relative clauses to connect your ideas more fluidly.
